I don’t say this lightly when I say this is the worst guidebook I’ve ever purchased. And it’s not close. When I read the glowing reviews (albeit there were only seven), it looked like it was worth a shot. Boy, was I wrong. Self-published, it looks like it was put together at a Kinko’s in 1999, which is putting it kindly. It’s purely anecdotal, which would be great...if the author actually completed the trek which he calls the “crowning(sic) jewel†of Patagonia, the “O†Trek at Torres del Paine. He didn’t, due to traveling in November, which is offseason at TdP. Which you would think would leave an author unqualified to write a guidebook about said trek...nope. What should’ve been a crappy blog became a crappier “book†that gives paragraphs about the few places he and his bros decided to eat. Cool! But guess what? That’s what Trip Advisor is for. But the author realizes that, which is why he dedicates a couple pages to recommend obscure apps like TA and Booking.Do yourselves a favor and tap into the amazing, up to date and FREE information from people who have spent more than two weeks in Patagonia in many places online within range of a quick Google search. I could write more, but I honestly don’t have the energy. I have purchased several thousand dollars worth of outdoor guidebooks in my life, most of which are still on my shelves. I have never made a decision to return a guidebook quicker and sprint to the UPS drop off location than I have with this book. No hyperbole.
I was quite disappointed with this book. The book is basically an extended trip report of the authors 3 week trip to southern Patagonia. It is not a trekking guide. It contains the treks in Torres del Paine, 3 dayhikes in El Chalten and 3 dayhikes in Ushuaia. (Some could be done as multi day hikes.) That's it. Other famous multiday treks in southern patagonia, like the Huemul Circuit or the Dientes trek on Isla de Navarino are missing. And there is no information on northern patagonia at all.The book has less than 120 pages, quite a large font and many pages are half empty because of the layout. For a book with the title "Trekking Patagonia" I would expect much more content. If you want to repeat the authors 3 week trekking trip (same hikes, same restaurants, same hostels) to Patagonia this book would be fine. But if you are expecting a guide book with many options look somewhere else.
Judy got back from a 3 week trip in Patagonia with a friend. We did all of the planning for our trip; it was a wonderful trip. I got this book about 3 months before leaving; it had great upbto date information. I highly recommend this book if you are going to Patagonia especially if you plan any amount of trekking,
I found this book extremely helpful while planning a trip to Patagonia. Don't delay purchasing it because the author's advice is very useful. I wish I had found this book at the beginning stages of my planning, because he was right on that you have to book some things early and I was already too late. Focusses on Torres del Paine, El Calafate and El Chalten hikes, camping and other places to stay and even has great advice if you head down to Ushuaia and Punta Arenas. Has useful suggestions about transportation issues as well. Easy to read. Well worth the price.
Andy has indeed written "A Fine Adventure" for everyone contemplating or even getting inspired to travel to the very tip of South America. The need-to-know information is there. Even if backpacking is not your thing, this book is also useful for what to look for in tours or while driving on your own. I have personally explored this region and found the information to be superb, including his photographs of many of the amazing vistas. Gee, maybe I should go back again!
I bought this book while planning a Patagonia trip for a few friends and have found it to be very helpful! It is filled with tips and advice on where to stay, when to go, how to travel around the area and a variety of things to do. Andy describes his own personal experience and has a lot of great insight on the area. This was a very interesting and well written book! I would highly recommend!
As a beginner traveler, I really appreciated Mr. Fine's introduction to Patagonia. When planning a trip to a region so remote, there's a multitude of factors to consider. As for the sites one should see, the options are overwhelming! Trekking Patagonia provided a comprehensive guide to preparing for such an outdoor extravaganza, both stateside and even after you've landed at Punta Arenas. From the packing guide, suggested apps and especially logistical surprises you can find along the way, there's an abundance of useful tips and tricks! Highly recommend to anyone interested in planning a trip to the southern tip of South America!
This is more of a diary of the author's trip than useful trekking guide. Also somewhat out of date--there is an ATM in el Chalten --but much better to go to money exchange in el Calafate than pay exorbitant ATM fees (23%)
