A great story of courageous women seeking news stories during the Vietnam war. Amazing true storiesfrom several female correspondents that found their way to the war zone, and in some cases wereeven taken prisoner. One thing was for sure, that these women were not in this profession for the money.The book highlighted an era that paved the way for women war reporters that hit the road and flew by theseats of their pants, quite literally. The lived with the soldiers, in the field and were there when the bullets wereflying.
While many memoirs by soldiers who served in Vietnam focus on the details of battle, this collection of stories by women who reported on the war delivers personal insights, emotions and vivid descriptions of the trials and tribulations of life in Saigon and in the field during turbulent times.
Some really engaging accounts from female reporters serving in Vietnam. They encounter the horrors of war, along with love and friendship (and sometimes just plain mindless convenient sex). The perspectives are as varied as the stories, I enjoyed it tremendously and believe it to be a strong contender in the pantheon of top Vietnam books.
I have heard about one of these women as she married a second cousin. In researching her I found this book. All the women have incredible stories to tell and this book should be required reading in every High School.
Although, I didn't see any women combat reporters when I was in Pakistan or Afghanistan, it was certainly apparent that it was in Vietnam that they reached a greater level of reporting. I was a personal fan of Kate Webb, and Dickie Chappell personally, but really enjoyed all the other women reporters stories that I grew up in High School reading about in the papers and magazines. All military historians and journalists who want to ready good copy of some of the greatest women combat journalists of the Vietnam era should get a copy of this book.
I could relate to the chapter on adoption from Viet Hoa Orphange that Ann wrote about as we adopted a baby from Viet Hoa and I knew Sister Robert Tron very well from when I was stationed in Vietnam.
My partner was a marine in the infantry in Viet Nam and ordered the book and said it would be an interesting read! He is looking forward to reading it.
wonderful, important book of woman journalists who covered war zones in Viet Nam when women there were very rare. Each story is very different..
