From School Library Journal

Grade 7 Up–This book addressed to evangelical Christian teens is written in a flippant, smart-aleck, "too cool for school" voice that undercuts the importance of the information it imparts. Lookadoo explains why oral sex is, indeed, sex, and explores a number of common myths, e.g., condoms prevent pregnancy and diseases. Generalizations are frequent–e.g., a teen father will abandon the pregnant girl. Some of the data is documented, but the author frequently cites his own interviews with teens. He portrays homosexuality as a matter of personal choice. "Then there is the 'I was born gay' argument. Well, poop on that," he writes, before getting tangled up in an oversimplified discussion of the role of genetics in both gays and convicts. As the book progresses, Lookadoo includes an increasing number of biblical references and offers a chapter counseling teens who have been sexually active and now want to become abstinent to turn to God. The book is laid out in punchy, bold graphics that are visually exciting but not particularly original. Fictionalized scenarios and dialogue appear frequently, both in the text and in sidebars. Eleanor Ayer's It's Okay to Say No: Choosing Sexual Abstinence (Rosen, 2000) presents a strong case for abstinence and includes none of the religious references that make Lookadoo's book particularly problematic for public-school collections.–Joyce Adams Burner, Hillcrest Library, Prairie Village, KS Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. The description, title, and cover are all misleading. This book conveys the idea that sex is evil and only married couples, woman and man, should have sex.I do not know why this author or anyone else believes this could be a useful book to teens experiencing current day reality, let alone anyone. It lacks valid statistics and helpful information about sex, and layers guilt onto those who have experienced normal feelings and ideas about sex.Do not buy it for yourself, but most importantly, do not give this to kids.

Excellent book for boys. Straight up plain talk. I bought this book and left it sitting in his room. He claims he isn't reading it but by the worn pages I can see he has!

This is an amazing book! I bought several copies and handed them out to my entire 12th grade Sunday School class. This book has great life-lessons that children who are graduating high school should know.

This is an awesome book to play a drinking game with, and a horrible book to educate anyone on sex.Every time the author Justin Lookadoo says something sexist or writes an incorrect fact, take a shot. I promise that by page 7 you will be absolutely wasted out of your mind. There are so many gems in this book, I really don't know where to begin. There's the quiz "Should You Have Sex?" which completely disregards if you love or trust the person. Apparently the only way you can win this quiz is if you answer "yes" to being married for 10,000 points where all the other questions in the quiz are worth 1 point. Then there's the amazing section "Are You Gay?" where Justin talks about "the gay doctors - you know the scientists who study homosexuality", then as predicted he compares a woman's virginity to a shiny car. As in - do you want to buy a shiny car? Or a banged-up used one?Anyway I digress. I give this book 5 stars because it not only provides great drinking games, but it can be used as kindling to start fires, or if you've run out of toilet paper.

This book is horrible, it spreads misinformation and inaccurate statistics. I'd like to think that misrepresenting facts is wrong, regardless of your ideology. For example, he says that the Department of Health and Human Services says that "THERE IS INSUFFICIENT EVIDENCE TO PROVE CONDOM PROTECTION AGAINST STDs." when in reality they say "Latex condoms significantly reduce your risk of getting most STDs, including HIV (the virus that causes AIDS), if you use them correctly every time." ([...]) This is dangerous, he's telling teenagers information that will discourage them from using life-saving protection. He's also lying about their effectiveness at preventing pregnancy, saying they have a 85% success rate each time they are used (assuming perfect use). In reality, they have a 98% success rate over a year in sexually active couples ([...]). Nothing in this book can be trusted.

My husband and I are youth sponsors at our church. My husband is also a high school teacher and I taught before becoming a stay at home mom. We consider ourselves "in the know" when it comes to what teens are talking about. This book is raw. It is real. It is written by a Christian with Christian perspectives. I recommend parents reading it. You'll be shocked by the content but realize it is nothing less than what your teens are constanly being bombarded with in the locker rooms, at school, in their teen magazines, and of course on TV. Only difference (and a big huge one that matters) is that this book explains everything in a Christian perspective and even has a chapter on getting right with God. Read it then have your teens read it. They'll get the Truth (God's truth) on the issues that most adults are too afraid to address.

Many of the figures quoted in this book about success rates of birth control and the like are in error. While abstaining from sex is the only fool-proof birth control method, giving teens incorrect information will make them doubt the usefulness of protection even if they do decide to have sex, creating a dangerous situation for all involved.

I have terminal pancreatic cancer; in other words, I'm dying. I have searched high and low, read all or parts of many books, searching for something that will explain to my family and friends what is happening to me and how I wish to be treated. In Final Journeys, I have finally found something which I wish that all those around me will have read beforeI die at home with the help of my county's hospice. It is an insightful and sensitive description of what I hope my own death will be like.

What I really liked about this book is that it comes from the perspective of patients and how their families react to Hospice care. My daughter has stage 4 small cell cancer in her lungs and liver. There are moments in this book when you laugh out loud and moments that require a box of tissues. It's interesting and also informative. It has helped me to understand both sides of cancer patients and how many different ways that people cope with a loved one who is dying, when all hope is lost. I come from the perspective of a mother. Her husband comes from another perspective, as to my grandchildren and great grandchildren. It was nice to know that we are all "normal" and not alone with our feelings and how we deal with them. Each of us deals with death I a different way, with one common factor: We're losing someone we love. For us, faith is what we all have in common together. It's not easy and perhaps it's not supposed to be, but it's the glue that holds us together. Yes, my daughter fears death. Not due to the lack of faith, but because she's worried about how we're all going to feel when we lose her. I highly recommend this book!

Dealing with a mother with severe dementia but otherwise relatively healthy at 91. Wanting to introduce an end of life discussion - the soft stuff as she has both advanced directives and POLST orders and DNR and do not hospitalize. The book gave me much dialogue examples to work with but was notably dealing with cancer diagnoses where person knew they were "terminal". This is pretty different than dying of an as yet unknown body failure in the face of not even appreciating one's own demise with dementia -which can lead to death less directly. So generally very useful with the limitation of not addressing dementia.

Maggie Callanan shares the knowledge gained from her years working as a hospice nurse. She sees herself as a sort of "birthing coach," at the end of life instead of at the beginning. She eases the dying process by caring for her patients & by giving them information to make their experience feel more normal & less frightening.Chapters of information are enlivened with many personal stories. And like Karen Bell in Living at the End of Life: A Hospice Nurse Addresses the Most Common Questions, Callanan models for us a compassionate, no-nonsense, way to talk about death & dying. "...Seeing that death, a necessary end, will come when it will come." (Shakespeare)I enjoyed this book. If there is a Maggie Callanan fan club, I want to become a member. Both Callanan & Bell make the point that a hospice team can do more for the patient (& family) when they are called in sooner rather than later. Hospice care is appropriate any time after a terminal diagnosis; but, obviously, it can accomplish more in several months than in several days.

Well written, easy to read and indeed, as the title says, this book is extremely practical. It presents a range of family situations, functional, dysfunctional, economically stable, scraping by, etc. in which a variety of terminally ill men and women of different ages and characters confront their dying. Ms. Callanan is experienced and very wise in all aspects of hospice care, and she brings a lovely sense of humor to writing about her work helping caregivers to face their own fragilities as well as bring care and comfort to the dying. The lists of readings and resources are useful in taking us further into specific issues, and I very much appreciated the Acknowledgments section at the end for what it revealed of the author's own difficulties and pain, and where/how she herself found strength for her own journey alongside the people of her stories.

If you are faced with death, or caring for someone who is facing death due to terminal illness (me for wife of 26yrs), this book is very helpful. Neither myself nor my partner are religious, so I really, really appreciated the fact that she does not use god(s) as part of the process of dying. The book is focused in its goal and well summarized through its introduction-- how do we die well ? How do we care for people who face death through a terminal illness that is frightening (eg cancer or ALS). In other words, what is a "good death".I think one of my favorite quotes that I often think about is"It is as normal to die as it is to be born. And yet somehow, when a terminal diagnosis is made, there is often a sense of being robbed. But in truth, dying is our last developmental task. When and how we must confront it is the mystery. The fact that we must is not." I like that.... "last developmental task"You can read the first chapter online an that will give you a sense of where she is coming from and her writing style. Of her two books, this is definitely the better, although I found the first one useful as well. But Final Journeys is a little more polished. Same format -- patient vignettes, used to illustrate the point she is making.Death and the meaning of life of course are incredibly personal things seen through the lens of religion and not. But I think there is enough commonality of experience for all. This book does an incredible balancing act across that spectrum that anyone from the pope to Christopher Hitchens will find its content helpful AND well presented. If you are reading this Maggie Callanan, thanks for the help!
