I have long felt that VB is a valid option for the production of high quality games. Most game programmers disagree with this and think the only real option is to use VC++. These programmers should really read this book- it will do away with this commonly held misconception! The truth is, most windows API's and DirectX functions work just as fast or nearly as fast with VB as with VC++. However, the ease of use of VB will likely cut the production time in half. This book clearly presents just about everything one needs to program games with VB and DirectX. I am not talking about silly shareware-quality card games like so many other VB game books present, but rather high end professional quality 2D and 3D game engines. I am going to be teaching a programming class next year. I feel that game programming is the best way to teach the subject as it covers just about every aspect of programming in a fun and exciting way. I have been looking for a good book to use for this class but I always ended up dissapointed... that is until I read this book! I will surely use it to help teach the course. I have read well over 100 programming books, and I probably own every game-related VB book ever written. None can compare to the clarity and depth of this book which is stuffed with 1100 pages of helpful information and professional insight. There are so many things I like about this book that it is hard for me to know where to begin. The logical progression is nice to see and makes it suitable even for those who may be new to game programming. Harbour starts by convincing the reader to stop using VB's graphical interface. He claims this will make it harder to think like a game programmer- and I totally agree! (Funny how every OTHER game book for VB I have ever read starts off by using a picture control to load a sprite- that is garbage and not how a professional game programmer would do things!) He then shows the inefficiencies of the inherent VB graphical functions and introduces some solid API replacements. Next he covers DirectDraw with DirectX7 (2D), DirectSound, DirectInput, and 3D graphics using DirectX8. It even explains how to make network games! Basically, everything you probably thought you couldn't do with VB is explained in this book. He even has a lighthearted writing style which makes it much easier to read. It only took me a few days to traverse the entire book. He even covers some very interesting historical aspects of game programming. The code examples are very clear and well commented. The examples alway start small and simple so new concepts are not lost in a clutter of code but then they progress to full game projects. The author must have spent a lot of time thinking about the best way to teach each subject. I would like to personally thank Jonathan Harbour for writing such a wonderful book. I always try to write a balanced review by discussing the aspects of the book that I think could be improved. It is hard to come up with anything I didn't like about this book. I guess I would have liked to see a few more advanced topics covered related to Direct3D like directional lighting- but let's be real, a single book can't cover everything (But this one sure comes close!) With any luck, perhaps he'll write a second book dedicated solely to 3D graphics with VB.

Before meeting this book I never even imagined that Visual Basic was reading for game programming, and after reading the introduction, I thought for sure that this guy was a has been programmer trying to write a book about something seemingly impossible just to sell it and reassure everyone of just that.A few chapters in, I realized just how wrong I was. Mr. Harbour digs right in and clears up all doubts before you even reach the hardcore code.This book is remarkable, and though I cannot compare it to the other DirectX with Visual Basic 6 books (as this is the only one I have read), I can assure you that it is indeed a GREAT buy. The sample code alone earns the five stars.. wow, if only I could write more than 1,000 words in this review.This book is good for beginners and advanced programmers alike, and even if you have absolutely no intention of writing your own game in Visual Basic, it is still a supurb resource for giving your user interfaces a makeover.

This book, came out when the original xbox came out. So the information and code are a little dated. Personally, I think they need to come out with a visual basic@net version of the book.However, I am giving this book a 3, because it has some good ideas. You'll get an idea of the things you can do. One thing I especially like is the multiplayer game in the example section.

As a Visual Basic die-hard, I got very excited about this book when I saw it. The prospect of expanding Visual Basic by using DirectX was just too much to pass on. Unfortunately, the title is a bit deceiving. The author spends the first chapter discussing a history of video and computer games, which is interesting to some, but, in my opinion, out of place in a technical book. The author assumes that you know little or nothing about Visual Basic and walks you through the installation process and provides an overview of the language. This may be useful for some, but I felt that someone who was new to the language would probably not pick up a book on a more advanced topic such as DirectX. After this, the author spends several chapters discussing antiquated graphics techniques that do not involve DirectX at all. These chapters were the biggest waste of space, in my opinion. I read through them all, thinking that all this information was a prerequisite to DirectX programming, but I was disappointed to learn that this is not the case. The author informs the reader at the end of it all that he is merely presenting a different method to give the reader more options. While I can appreciate the effort to provide multiple solutions to a problem, the book is supposed to be about programming with DirectX. There are a multitude of books out there that will teach you how to use these other graphics techniques, and anyone who was interested in learning these techniques would pick up one of those books.That being said, when the author finally does begin discussing DirectX, the material he provides is a solid introduction to using DirectX with Visual Basic. He provides a good overview of how to use all components of DirectX, and the source code that comes with the book provides useful examples of the techniques being demonstrated. There are four complete games that come with the book also, although actually only two of them use DirectX as a base for their graphics. Reading this book will also provide you with a level of familiarity with DirectX that you will be able to use C++ DirectX books and translate the code contained therein to Visual Basic. At the end of this book, you will be in a position to design and program your own simple game using DirectX.In short, be aware of what you are getting. If you have little or no experience with Visual Basic and would like to learn game programming using this language, this book is probably worth picking up, although you will probably need to suppliment this information with another source on the Visual Basic language. If you are looking for a comprehensive tutorial on DirectX, I suggest looking elsewhere.

This book rocked my world. Shocking to me in many ways. The combination of misinformation, desire for monetary success, and ingenuity in "beating the system" created such havoc in this country. I won't be be able to forget this book.I spent half my childhood in Portsmouth, and visited it occasionally in the 1990s and 2000s. I saw the changes, but was unaware off the depths of corruption. I was stunned. Completely stunned.The author closes with news that Portsmouth is in recovery; I hope they defy all the "coasters" and cynics. I'll be looking for a way I can help even if in a small way.On the downside, I do wish the author hadn't referenced the delivery system as "like pizza" so many times; I got the point and the repetition made me hungry for Domino's.

One of the MOST important and riveting books I've read in a long time - and that is not an exaggeration! I rarely give 5 stars but this one deserves it. An incredible journey and comprehensive telling by perhaps one of our best living journalists of what went wrong leading to the opiate-heroin-drug-overdose-death epidemic in America, how easily opiates evolved into a heroin epidemic, ravaged small town America and then spread well beyond into comfortable communities of privilege.I came upon this book delving into trying to understand what has been going on in this country (starting with Hillbilly Elegy), and why despite reading broadly than most, I was so taken aback by the Nov'16 election outcome. The factors are myriad - and that journey continues - but what became obvious to me was that the opiate crisis particularly in places like Portsmouth Ohio or the Appalachia created much of the senseless destruction that contributed to it. It's only when that crisis reached "us" with the death of people like Philip Hoffman Seymour in 2014 did we even begin to pay attention. But it was too late. Given the garbage heap of non-essentials that the media shoves at us they largely missed the urgency of this story. Death due to drug overdoses exceeded those from car crashes as early as 2007!!! YES you read that right - 2007 - nearly a decade before we paid attention. How broadly was that publicized, and how deeply investigated? Thankfully for us there are journalists out there like Sam Quinones who researched it for 5 years and then wrote this tome.Besides being a great read because of his fantastic narrative style and passion for getting to the bottom of it, Quinones brings together a complete picture of all that played here. The opiate-heroin crisis resulted from a PERFECT STORM of varied factors coming together --- the drastic swing in the pain management pendulum with a change towards prescribing opiates starting in the '90's willy-nilly to one and all under the misguided - and to some extent deliberate - notion that they are not addictive when prescribed for pain "pain soaks up the euphoria"! There was no "data" or "study", instead a small paragraph in a letter to an editor of a medical journal that set this off. No one asked questions or asked to see the source! The man who wrote the paragraph had no intention nor data to support what was inferred.-- unethical companies like Purdue Pharma taking advantage of this new fad, pushing their drug(s) esp. OxyContin on anyone with ANY pain creating drug addicts who would never have gotten there. Purdue knew the "data" was faulty and that new addicts were being created everyday yet they pushed it hard until the end,-- unethical, often "quack" pill doctors who appeared at mushrooming "pain clinics" everywhere to provide willing Rx for OxyContin; they only took $250 in cash per visit!-- unlimited and unchecked Medicaid card, SSI, disability benefits that funded the pills; a medicaid card enabled you to get pills with a $3 copay that you could resell for thousands of dollars. One reason for the millions who are not employed nor looking for work...-- the appearance of black tar heroin from Mexico for which OxyContin happened to be the perfect gateway drug a lot cheaper and better quality (high potency) than the white powder; OxyContin traveled west and black tar heroin traveled east and the invasion was complete!-- a new business model for selling heroin via near unbreakable Mexican drug dealing cells where the heroin is delivered like pizza to customers along with great service by salaried drivers!Yes that's how crazy it got -- and we are only now beginning to understand and unravel let along address! Read on for an amazing book and incredible journey of learning.

Excellent guide. I purchased this book in Kindle format to take with me on Pilgrimage. For myself, this is a book which could have stayed at home, and been more useful in hard copy format. The text often refers to various pictorial plates, which I would have preferred to tab so that I could go back and forth to review while reading. I did not lower the stars due to my preference, as the guide is comprehensive.

This book came highly recommended by my tour guide in Israel. If you have any interest in biblical/ancient architecture, history or theology of the Holy Land, this book is a must read!

If you want an easy-to-carry quick reference guide that sums up much of what's in the 5-volume archaeological books with info on all the sites in Israel, this is fantastic. Good for a trip guide or something you can use in a historical geography class when you want information but don't need the entire site report. Fr. Murphy-O'Connor did a wonderful job with this.

I bought this landmark book for a trip, and also downloaded it to carry in my bag while traveling. It's an invaluable explanation of so many sites, in depth, by an expert with tons of experience in the area. It's not an ordinary guidebook, it's for anyone who really want to know the details of the history, architecture, religious meanings, and legends and narratives that belong to the various sites. It's a gold mine of information.

This book was superb. Written by a top-notch Scripture scholar, and an archaeologist to boot. It sifts the probable from the likely from the possible, which means that when Murphy-O'Connor pronounces a site or a building authentic, you sit up and take notice. Next to the Bible, this was my bible in the Holy Land. I've recommended it to many people.

When you go to the Holy Land, read it every night before you visit the sights. You will understand what you are going to see, know what to look for, have a better experience, and retain more detailed knowledge. This book helped me to sort fact from fiction. It enriched my biblical imagination and benefits my prayer life and preaching.

Molinksy's work offers front-line managers and staffers some solid, actionable advice on working with colleagues and partners from another culture. His 6 dimensions are insightful and comprehensive -- he has devised a very practical framework for taking concrete action to improve one's cross-cultural communication skills. He supplies plenty of practical examples and scenarios to bring the lessons to life.Molinsky's aim is to facilitate communication, and that is both the book's strength and limitation. His advice helps Americans to analyze and accommodate cultural differences. It contains a wealth of excellent information for those who want to be liked by colleagues, staffers and supervisors from other countries. He has little to say about influencing, persuading, negotiating, or managing differences of opinions across cultural boundaries, however. It's a great resource for building solid working relationships, but stops there.

One sign of a good business "self-help" book is that you are able to apply the information right away, which I did with Global Dexterity. The day after I finished the book, I was able to use the advice in the section "Getting Others to Forgive Your Cultural Mistakes" to turn an awkward situation with a new Iranian business acquaintance into a humorous one by "blaming" something I said on my American culture.While this book would not be a substitute for the country-specific tactics that a book that specialized in a particular country would, it does provide an over-arching strategy for approaching cultural differences in the framework of the 6-dimensions of cultural behavior expectations (Directness, Enthusiasm, Formality, Assertiveness, and Self-promotion). The points are well-illustrated with interesting anecdotes and scenarios which make the book an enjoyable read.

Global Dexterity accomplishes a great deal in ten short chapters. It helps the reader understand cultural challenges through the experiences of Russians, Indians and Chinese professionals that struggled with the complexities of American culture. It also shows the flip side by offering examples of Americans who faced similar challenges managing operations abroad. The book then guides readers to understand the psychological challenges of bridging cultures, as well as to diagnose their own cultural mindset, customize their behavior and hone the results into effective solutions. Of critical importance is Dr. Molinsky's recognition that success cannot be based on the individual losing himself in the effort; in fact, preserving authenticity of self is an important underlying theme. The result is an eminently useful and practical book that effectively translates formal academic research into practical solutions for anyone doing business abroad, hiring foreign talent or just navigating the increasingly complex cultural environments at the heart of global governance, commerce and trade. To summarize, Global Dexterity is a must have for anyone working abroad or managing a multicultural workforce at home.

Andy Molinksy has written one of (if not *the*) most lucid books on navigating the international cultural divide. As business continues to become more global every day, and as success depends increasingly on being able to adapt successfully to new cultures, the practical advice in "Global Dexterity" could not be more timely or useful. Molinksy has done an admirable job blending his own academic research, experience teaching, and practical examples to provide readers with a eminently grounded and extremely accessible guide.

Having published a number of general guides to backyard poultry, including one for children, Damerow here concentrates on everything that can go wrong: diseases; problems associated with keeping birds in close quarters or caging them; litter; cannibalism; vitamin deficiency, resulting in poor molting; incubators that are too hot or too cold; predators; and the invasions of rats. She stresses that the best preventative measures involve protecting one's flock against outside influences (such as wild birds or other chickens), careful culling, and balanced nutrition. Damerow is a good writer, carefully walking the line between insulting the reader's intelligence, a flaw with many books of this sort, and giving more technical information than growers need. Her discussion of how one keeps straight which chick came from which mating--which involves the injection of food dyes into fertilized eggs, and carefully marking the webbings of feet--is downright ingenious. There's a lot of info in this book, but I don't know how useful it would be for most people who raise a few chickens in their backyard. I learned a lot about Marek's from the book, which was great for me because my birds came down with it, and the book helped me to understand what's going on. There isn't much you can do for your bird once it gets afflicted with Marek's so I didn't find any remedies for it, but it gave me peace of mind about not spending a ton of money trying to treat my chickens.You also get a bit paranoid reading this book, because if there is anything wrong with your chicken, this book has a long list of diseases that chickens can get, so you wonder if it's at all possible to raise healthy chickens.It would have been helpful if the author provided dosages for the recommended drugs or supplements. Also, there are hardly any natural remedies recommended, which is a shame because some things can be addressed with natural remedies. Fresh Eggs Daily is a book with lots of good info, but no one seems to have it in stock. I got my copy of it from a local bookstore.

I love this book so much that I keep a copy in my house and one in the cupboard of the brooder house. It isn't a veterinary manual, but it is great for maintaining basic health and administering first aid to my flocks. I have diagnosed and healed many birds with different injuries or ailments over the years using the information in this book.More than that, I have recommended it to many people, and given it as gifts to others.If only there were a comparable edition for waterfowl! I am no longer raising chickens, just ducks and geese.

This book is a bit overwhelming (for me), but is very good. This author knows his chickens and understands how to embed this knowledge into a book. This is a reference book with step-by-step details for diagnosis.Excellent indexes and very good descriptions for the backyard hobbyist.Information for just about any disease that chickens could have with a lot of details. I have no medical background so I don't know how solid the information is, but I learned a lot about potential issues and solutions for my chickens.I have eight chickens that I raise for eggs, and enjoy just watching them each afternoon. Two years experience with raising chickens.

This is my go to medical symptom identification, prognosis and treatment. It even has shedules of a chick's age when you could see signs of each illness. It is thorough and comprehensive. It is packed with charts and a glossary to help the non medical student make sense of anyting that could plague your chickens. This is a Must Have for anyone raising chickens either for meat or eggs or simply for pets.

This is the first book I turn to when I have a question regarding the health of my chickens. I breed purebred bantams and large fowl, (as well as ducks, guineas, and geese.) This book was great 12+ years ago. The second edition is out now, and it's amazing. I wrote a review in JAVMA for the second edition after reading both it and the first edition. The new release is an excellent reference for both flock owners and veterinarians.

If you just want a pet chicken or two in your back yard, you may be able to get along fine without knowing what's in this book. But if you need to get serious about the health and well being of your flock, do yourself a big favor - read this book cover to cover at least three times.You and your birds will be glad you did.

Maya Banks will not be digging into my pocket to buy her junk. This book was rediculous and offensive. I really wished I hadNOT ordered this trilogy at once but rather had sampled the first book and then decided to purchase or NOT the rest. I enjoy erotica. I even enjoyed 50 Shades of Gray despite the 6th grade writting skills. But this book was a canvas of degradation of women. His kink is mixed with anger and punishment as well as humiliation exposing Mia to getting used and raped by the other men.I was insulted bordering on traumatized. That my friends is NO turn on and for those of you who were I sugest you examine the sadistic-masochistic thread that runs deep within you.As if that were not enough, Mia still pines for and accepts this piece of crap nto her life. I truly doubt any man like that could commit to women as he views them like a piece of meat let alone he is portrayed as a future potential husband and father. PRETTY ASCARY!!!. Repulsive storyline. I don't know what the deal is with Maya Banks but she does a diservice to women everywhere portraying them as door mats and confusing abuse with romance. What a sell out. I am embarrased I bought this junk trilogy. Too bad I could not give it NO STARS. I want the time I spent readig this trash back.

Ok so I've wanted to read this author's work for some time. Anticipation, excitement over finally getting to only to be disappointed. This is my first book by Maya Banks and I really was on the fence of like /dislike. First Gabe, the lead male, just came off bosey and uncaring most of the time instead of alpha dominant Hottness and Mia, well she wasn't a strong female lead. I mean some of the things Gabe made her do, she did no questions. What? I mean WTF!!! Second, that contract no just no, it's not let's discuss my expectations and go over your questions or confusion it's sign and be my slave do as I say with no mind of your own. Third... all I'm going to say is Paris that would have and should have been Mia's wake up call, but no she will follow blindly for love. Ugh God save me from weak minded and willed females!!! Love or no love have some respect for yourself or no one else will either! Sadly I already bought the second in this series so I'll probably read it at some point. 2.5 stars

Ok... This review may have a few spoilers, so stop reading if you don't want to know.This book started out too similar to Fifty Shades for me, the contract, the whole "I own you" and the bondage sex... And then it went way too far it some places for my taste.He lets other guys touch her and basically assault her while she's tied up in a hotel room in Paris (because he tied her up and made her give him a blow job in front of others without warning her first!) and even though she hated it she doesn't blame him at all? Really?!Not too mention the amount of things he does to her with no warning throughout the rest of the book - insert anal plug here - and she just goes along with it... But supposedly she is "different" to all the others.I just found some parts far too disturbing for my particular tastes, some of the sex scenes are hot but others were just too much pain and forcefulness for me.I gave three stars because I liked some of the other characters and I want to read their books (hopefully they aren't as disturbing as the first)... But honestly? Gabe is no where near what I believe a main male character should be and behave like - even if he is into kinky sex - and it really brought the book down for me that I didn't like him.

I wanted this to be the better written 50 shades; unfortunately it was disappointing all the way around. Let's start with the hero, Gabe. He is just some Dom wanna be who is ultimately too weak to protect his woman. He lets her down time and time again to the point where another man physically abuses her. Why she forgives and runs back to him is a mystery. Heroine was such a twit I can't even remember her name and I just finished the book. College grad (never says what her major is) works part-time in bakery and basically mooches off her older, richer brother while secretly lusting after his best friend and business partner. That's it, that's her whole life. Nitwit Gabe presents her with bondage contract (that everyone knows isn't legally binding because, duh, slavery was abolished a long damn time ago) this makes me seriously doubt his business acumen. What he should have had her sign was a non-disclosure agreement, which he never does. Like all Dom wanna be's Gabe is obsessed with anal play (yawn) and makes the forgettable heroine wear butt plugs all day as punishment. She is not allowed to remove them and not allowed to wear panties. Seriously, does this woman never need to have bowel movements? Lubricant gets warm and runny people - I'd hate to see the chairs she was sitting in at work and God forbid she ever farted or sneezed and sent the damn thing shooting across the room. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Starts off very 50 Shades - which was not really necessary given the circumstances. We have Gabe Hamilton, 38 and Mia Crestwell, 24 who have known one another for years. Gabe is partnered with Mia's brother in business and a long standing friendship. Gabe has long felt something more than "brotherly love" for Mia, but has not acted on it for a host of reasons. Mia also felt an attraction to Gabe since her teens. Given the background, was the whole "contract" really necessary? Gabe could have/should have handled it differently. Ok, maybe it would have made for a boring story, but there could have been other ways Mia and Gabe become involved...As the story goes on, I couldn't understand how Mia could so easily accept some of the things Gabe did to her. The incident in Paris, for example. I mean WTF, how could she forgive him for that.I forged on because I liked the other characters. Specifically Ash and Jace. I want to see where the story goes from here. Not the best romance series out there, but it's up to you.
