First, the place. Charleston is a national treasure. It is a dynamic, prosperous, historic Southern city that maintains a nearly perfect state of preservation. Without question, the things that have made Charleston into the gem of a town it is today are historic periods of immense wealth followed by periods of poverty. The city was simply too poor to replace and rebuild its old structures until preservationists discovered them in the 1920s. After 100 years of restoration and refinement, Charleston has become so perfectly beautiful that you'd be forgiven for thinking you're on a movie set. Despite this, there's nothing fake about the facade. This is the real deal - a working colonial city within the Caribbean sphere of influence brought forward for all of us to enjoy today. Now, the book. Charleston guidebooks are a hard lot to get your hands around. The vast majority of them are written for first-time visitors, and this one is no exception. Locals and well-worn Charleston travelers will find little new material here. That said, if you're a first-timer, this is a very good book. The directory of sights is thin, but covers the basics. The chapters dedicated to festivals and activities are also good, but the real value of this book is its comprehensive listings of restaurants and lodgings.True, much of your experience is Charleston is going to be visual - the architecture, gardens, landscapes are a real feature. But there is no denying that another major source of joy during your visit is going to be time spent in your hotel, and time spent hovering over plates of incredible new-South cuisine. This book's got you covered very well in that department. There are some interesting sidebars on topics such as Gullah Culture and the Civil War that add some substance to the text. Suggested tours and itineraries are very basic, and cover only the tourist highlights. I'd like to see more original thought put into these.Maps are super simple and functional. The color photography is nice, but is not really substantial enough to be a feature of the book.
Historians, architects, foodies and gardeners awake! If you've not heard about Charleston, by all means, read this book. If you've heard of, but have never been to Charleston, run, do not walk, to your nearest travel agency and book your trip! Few places anywhere on earth offer the astonishing mix of visual beauty, culture, hedonism and historic preservation that is Charleston. It is, truly, a wonder to behold, and an absolute national treasure. So now that we've established the distinction of the place, let's talk about the book. No guide book to Charleston could possibly cover everything there is to see, eat, do, sleep and shop in the city. A guidebook will be based on highlights by necessity. Also, one of the major attractions in this compact, walkable place is a bit of aimless wandering, a bit of "let's see what's down here" kind of strolling. Love historic architecture? You can stroll the streets and alleys for days and never get bored. A guidebook isn't meant to serve this kind of activity, and this one is no exception. What you get is a solid reference to the well-known places that are guaranteed to offer an authentic and enjoyable experience. Visit the locations featured here and your interest will be piqued for further exploration.Charleston is heavily dependent on the tourist industry, and listings are both variable and short-lived. The best of the hotels and restaurants hang around for years, but be aware that the hot new thing in Charleston may have changed since this book was published. The hotel and restaurant listings included are spot on as far as recommendations, and are the real reason for buying the book. The lodging section is particularly good. One note about some terminology used in the book. The text makes reference in many places to "the historic district." It is important to understand that Charleston has many historic districts, not just one. There are, quite literally, thousands of historic buildings. My only complaint is slight. Charleston deserves its own guidebook. There's no need to include Hilton Head and the other parts of the Lowcountry (which consume about one third of the book) because these entries detract from what could be dedicated to more coverage in Charleston. Good coverage of Mt. Pleasant is included, and this quiet enclave would be a feature attraction if Charleston wasn't on the other side of the Cooper River. This book is about as balanced a presentation as a general traveler can expect, while people with more specific interest can find better resources elsewhere.
The book provided minimally adequate information of the sights and sounds. I became suspicious when it purported to present the best of Charleston while not alluding to several hotels and restaurants and sights that I have visited and liked in Charleston. I downloaded the book for free and it was well worth what it cost me.
This Fodor's guide met all my expectations. It had many good ideas for places to see. We used this book to plan our vacation well. The only thing the book could not prepare us for was two days of 99 degree heat and 955 humidity in July. That needs to be experienced by all.
Guide is mostly a compendium of places to stay, shop or eat. I was looking for something catered more to giving you a walking tour of neighborhoods, some history, important sites, etc.
In an age when you can find most of what you want on the internet, this book was useful for reading on the airplane on our flight to Charleston. Nicely organized and easy to follow.
This guide is quite helpful with restaurant recommendations. The hotel listings omitted mention of the comfortable hotel where we stayed (for the second time), the King Charles Inn. Some of the information is out-dated.
The maps are not the greatest. I'm used to fold-out maps of the area, with key points noted. Also, there are no candid opinions about anything.
