This is an oldie but a goody. The author’s recommendations and findings are not necessarily politically correct; however, they are generally accurate. Instead of saying the “right” thing, he instead tries to accurately report what has been found in studies or surveys. The truth is not always pleasant or what you want to hear, but it is still important to know. Many of the findings seem/sound outdated because of the way we think about these things in today’s society. I wish many of the statistics were different. This book gives much needed insight. Even if you don’t agree with the opinions, you are given the knowledge that they exist. A few things are outdated as time has passed, but an educated reader can infer the meaning behind the thoughts and apply them to be current.

I read the first edition of this book in the 1980's and loved it. It helped me land a couple good positions, despite coming out of 5 years of no employment due to a serious back injury from an auto accident.I have read this new version and am once again ready to stand and give Mr. Molloy a standing ovation and enthusiasitic round of applause. I bought a copy for my sister, and know my niece will borrow it from her.This book is for any woman who is struggling to gain career/business successs and is willing follow the suggestions based on extensive research to the letter. I bought this new edition as my old original copy fell apart I used it so much!Again I find my self entering an new area of employment, after a long absence (15+ years as my Dad's caregiver on a 24/7 basis. This time I will be self employed due to my age and limited ability. This book is GREAT - so encouraging, made me want to rush out and get things rolling (and I did by getting rid of my gray hair! - back ot auburn and I am almost embarrassed to tell the rave reviews I got from friends and family. My pastor's wife said, "Wow! You look so young and beautiful (now there are two words I haven't heard to describe me in so long I can't recall the last time I received this kind of compliment.You know a little of my story of how this new version of Women's Dress for Success has helped me. Need to be more effective in your business or career? This book is a good place to start seeking for ideas and assistance.

Although this was updated in the 90's, and is therefore out of date, the advice is still extremely relevant. I appreciated the section on women that have to make-down, instead of make-up, it was an eye opener! I noticed that in the 90's version of this book Molloy left out the section on what to wear to be successful with different types of men that was included in the 70's edition of this book. I'm assuming that he got some flack for that section from feminists and while that's understandable, I wish it had been included in this edition because it was an interesting section :)

This new edition of "Women's Dress for Success" covers a lot more than clothes and accessories, and is a treasure trove of advice for any woman interested in self improvement. For most of us, there is usually room for "image enhancement," in how we present ourselves to the world, as our way of dressing and speaking, etc. all sends a message. John Molloy's recommendations are also helpful if you are on a budget. His "fabric test," color combinations, and style tips will save you a lot of money, and you can even do well using his guidelines shopping in a thrift store! You will no longer buy without planning, the things in your closet will mix and match properly, and you will not buy something "just because it's on sale," and find later that it doesn't really look good with anything else you own.John Molloy covers the basics of what to wear in a business environment, which he has researched extensively, and very few of the guidelines have changed over the years. The one thing he states that has changed, is that now "dressing for success" is "almost universally accepted," and yes, there is a double standard, as men can get away with dressing poorly, but few women can, if they want the corner office with the view. Some of Molloy's research is fascinating, especially in the legal profession, as he explains how color, style, and dress size will influence a jury ("In personal injury cases, clients were more likely to be believed if they wore outfits one size too large").Aside from advice on clothes, accessories, and hair styles (all accompanied by black and white drawings), Molloy discusses body language (posture and facial expression), and the all-important and often ignored speech pattern, vocabulary and voice tone. He recommends recording oneself while on the telephone with friends, and playing it back. Anyone who has not done this is in for a surprise! Molloy also covers weight and height, and how the clothes you choose should change according to your size. Informative and entertaining, "New Women's Dress for Success" is a classic, and well worth reading if you want to "move up the corporate ladder," or just want an organized closet of clothes that make the most of who you are.

This is a very informative book that is a must for a professional woman and even non professional women who want more respect. I have had it for years. I wish he would put out a new one. He supports his conclusions with detailed studies, using lots of people. He covers everything, from hair styles and makeup, to shoes and briefcases.I just checked the statistics, and men are still out earning women! So more women need to read this book!I agree, the jacket is still the hallmark of the American businesswoman. It is worth it to buy a wool suit, as you will spend less time keeping it looking good verses another fabric. If you own one jacket, it should be navy.However, he says not to wear pants unless you must. It looks like pant suits are much more accepted today than 15 years ago.From what I recall, he notes that the briefcase should be brown, but the shoes were best at navy, and who knows the color of the belt. I think it looks better to have the same color leather for those things and black is pretty flexible.You have to read the entire book as acceptable dress is different in different situations.

(4.5 stars) In the last couple of years I purchased a few astronomy books, and this was one of them. Wishing to take a short break from the American West, I picked this book out of the pile and started reading a couple of weeks ago. This is the fifth updated version of this particular book, published in 2010. The sub-sections within chapters are generally only a few pages each which makes it easy to read in small segments which is what I like at the end of the day. The material is fascinating, there are many interesting images and the captions are very good too. Overall, the writing is easy to understand and, generally speaking, seems to be geared toward the "everyman" which I appreciate. Not knowing enough about astronomy I can't really comment on the accuracy of the writing, but Mr. Dickinson does appear to have a very good reputation in the field. There are times though when I wish I could ask Mr. Dickinson a question to clarify some point. For instance, on page 99 he writes that elliptical galaxies are the most populous type of galaxy in the universe. But then on page 109 he writes: "Galaxy collisions are relatively rare today [and that] most elliptical galaxies, it seems, are not born--they are merely heaps of stars from dismembered spiral galaxies." But if elliptical galaxies are more probably the result of two spiral galaxies colliding, then I'm not sure how he can say these collisions are rare today, yet still outnumber spiral galaxies. There must have been quite a few collisions in the past, so many that even with the few that occur today, they still outnumber spiral galaxies. I'm I understanding this right? Also, on page 104 he writes that if/when our Milky Way galaxy collides with the Andromeda galaxy that the earth probably won't be affected. Based on the tremendous amount of gravity that would disrupt our universe, I don't quite understand how that can be accurate, especially when on the same page he writes: "Even a close miss would twist off much of a spiral galaxy's twirling arms, although the nuclear region would remain essentially intact." Aren't we located in one of the spiral arms? I'm new to this topic so maybe my questions are academic and I just don't understand. I tried to find a way to contact the author but my Internet search came up empty. Still, this is a great book.May 11, 2014Finished this book this morning. While it would be great to chat with the author for occasional clarification or to answer a question, this is a first rate book. Especially enjoyed some of the closing chapters that deal with the possibility of extraterrestrials and how the universe will end. Plently of interesting information and lots of great photos. I feel like I accomplished something "smart" by reading this book. Highly recommended.

A friend and I are taking an intro to astonomy course and this is one of the recommended texts. I can certainly see why. It's a very clearly written work with a heavy emphasis on planetary and solar astronomy and a lucid discussion of stellar objects visible with personal telescopes, subjects that the noviate astronomer is most likely to find of interest. The author also dedicates two chapters to the subject of theoretical astrophysics at the very basic level of cosmology, ie) the theory of the origin, the possible ultimate destiny of the universe, and the liklihood of the existance of coevil universes parallel to our own. Dickinson also throws his lot in with those who would believe in UFOs, to the extent that while he doesn't believe in the sightings people report--however well meaningly--he does believe that intelligent life is out there and may well already know of our existance. He gives a thorough and lucid outline of why he believes this to be the case. He also summarizes the SETI project and the ultimate change in position on this topic of high visibility astronomers like the late Carl Sagan, Iosif Shklovskii, and Ben Zuckerman. A very interesting book, and one that whets the appetite for further information.

I love this book. My absolute favorite about the universe! It's written in such a way to be understood by the lay person with beautiful pictures. Highly recommend!

That's the way Psalm 19 begins. It continues, "The skies proclaim the work of His hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard." This book is graphic proof of those wise words, written 2,700 years before man came up with deep-space telescopes. As I study the photos in this book, it stretches my concept of God greatly. Look at one page, covered with so many stars that it would take a lot of time and patience just to count them in this "snapshot" of space, and you'll find the words of Psalm 147 mind-boggling: "He knows the number of the stars and calls them all by name." I treasure this book as an aid to contemplating the greatness of my God and Creator, the Lord Jesus Christ!

Well laid-out book with awesome pics and logical flow. Definitely a professional work. It does not get very deep in explanations but there is enough material for a novice to get started. Overall: VERY GOOD!

Any fan of Terrance Dickison astronmy books would be more than delighted with this addition to the library. Top notch all the way with tons of beautiful pictures!

I have always been interested in astronomy and just recently picked it up as a hobby. Terence Dickenson does a wonderful job conveying concepts to the average person. He has made it so easy to understand and so interesting it is difficult to put the book down. The pictures are perfect for those of us with little imagination. My ten year old is even reading it with me. Excellent!

Was a huge fan of the YouTube channel but I read books with an unbiased and low expectations no matter who wrote it. When I read it, it just made me appreciate my life so much afterwards, so much so that I cried in joyfullness. The book covers on how pretty much all famous inventors and some that aren't well known. This book showed that we are much more capable than what we think we are capable of.

I discovered Dagogo's YouTube channel, Cold Fusion, about a year and a half ago. I appreciated the way he weaved story-telling with images and video. I was delighted to find out he would be offering a book about the history of technology. Just like his videos, his book is perceptive, engaging, original, and easy to follow. The book is a unique overview of the fascinating technological world in which we have come to live. Highly recommended for anyone interested in connecting the dots in regards to technological development and trends.

This book is awesome. We'll written and hard to put down. If you like history and technology then you need to read it.

"Robert Noyce left Intel in the late ’70s. Today, Noyce is eighty-nine years old and thoroughly enjoys fishing." In fact, very unfortunately, Robert Noyce died in 1990 at the age of 62.

Dagogo's first book and I loved it. Great read and goes fast.

Short and concise, if I can give it 4.5 stars I would. Since that's not an option I'll give a 5. Mainly because of some minor things like grammar and disagreement about Ripple, ripple is not a blockchain, perhaps my own opinion.

It is like reading the summary of technological advancements happened in every decade.

About the Author

Frank M White is Professor Emeritus of Mechanical and Ocean Engineering at the University of Rhode Island. He studied at Georgia Tech and M.I.T. In 1966 he helped found, at URI, the first department of ocean engineering in the country. Known primarily as a teacher and writer, he has received eight teaching awards and has written four textbooks on fluid mechanics and heat transfer. From 1979 to 1990 he was editor-in-chief of the ASME Journal of Fluids Engineering and then served from 1991 to 1997 as chairman of the ASME Board of Editors and of the Publications Committee. He is a Fellow of ASME and in 1991 received the ASME Fluids Engineering Award.

I failed a class with this book. Took it again and got an A. If the book is hard to understand blame the professor not the book. With the proper guidance I found the book to be a very useful tool to help me master Fluids. I did not use the book exclusively. Youtube is a life saver. I gave the book 4 stars because I did need to go to outside resources to better understand some of the material. A few of the chapters are complete mathematical gibberish that can be bypassed with a little common sense. I just put the book down and used Youtube for these chapters. Most of the solutions are on Chegg and that is a big help. I know the new edition is out. A lot of the problems are the same with just a different problem number, so this book is still good to get just for that reason..plus it is a lot cheaper now. A guy in my class had an ancient version of the text and it worked for him.

Overall, this is a solid book for fluid mechanics. I just used it for my first semester fluids class, and both my friends and I enjoyed it! It offers fairly clear explanations, excellent example problems, and is interesting, concise, and offers a lot of clearly illustrated figures, as well as a lot of excellent problems at the end of the chapters. So, why the 4 stars? Well, here are the problems with the book:- Many of the solutions at the end of the book are wrong... which is very frustrating since this is the 7th printing of this textbook.- The book skips a lot of steps sometimes (especially during the Navier-Stokes equations section, which is very frustrating for someone first learning the subject). In general, this book assumes you have a very strong math background (i.e. you can instantly recognize and solve diff. eqs, double/triple integrals)- Not enough examples - the examples White does go through are very basic compared to the problems at the end of the chapters. However, this can be easily fixed by searching for additional practice problems online.All in all, this is a solid book.. it is overall very readable and interesting, assuming you have a strong math background. Just be familiar with some basic first order diff eqs, some linear algebra, and multivariable and you should be fine!

I used this text book for my college's Fluids I and Fluids II courses.The text wasn't used as heavily in Fluids I, but in Fluids II, this text was our complete source of equations and overall explanation.The text explains the material well, as well as covering much of the content in an example or two. The homework problems are very difficult, but have the answers to all of the even ones so that you can check yourself as you progress. The problems will become harder and more complex as you get through them, but the concepts will become clearer as you solve more and more of the problems.The tables and charts are detailed and give a lot of useful information for solving just about everything in the text.The main disadvantage is that there are equations in the compressible flow portion of the text that were not included because the author expects the CD included to be used to compute the values necessary.Other than that, this is a solid text book.

Frank needs to be a little more clear in his examples and how he states his problems. There is a disconnect between what he knows and what he must think a first time fluids student knows. Sometimes people forget where they come from or perhaps he has never struggled to learn a new concept. Here is an example that is just irritating: He starts with calling atmospheric pressure P(a) then calls gage pressure P(A)! Why not call it P(g) Frank?! The book is ambiguous thru and thru! God help the person who has a bad fluids teacher with this book!

This was a required book for my fluid mechanics class. I found it hard to follow and generally unorganized and off the point. Very difficult to learn from. I would recommend ignoring your teachers when they say it's required and buy a better book instead.

This is a bit cheeky, but after reading this book, which I got as a gift, I was reminded of how my ex would always complain about his "Playboy" when it would come."Such great pictures," he would say, "now why the hell do they think they can improve them with a lot of pretentious writing."I felt the same way about this book. Except that the pictures weren't as good as Playboy, either.

The book is valuable for its wealth of photographs of urban as well as rural America during the depression years, but marred a little by the rather snide tone of the author's account of the establishment of the Farm Security Administration under Roosevelt, and also by the devotion of a few too many pages to photos by Jack Delano, which are interesting but not in the same league as the work of Arthur Rothstein, Carl Mydans, Ben Shahn, Dorothea Lange, Russell Lee and some others. The author could have paid his debt for friendship and information from by the photographer's son a little less lavishly ( and there may have been a reason why some of the photos were not previously published ). Still, the book is a treasure trove of wonderful images and I'm happy I bought it.

One of our national treasures - both literally and figuratively speaking - is "The File", a collection of 145,000 photographic exposures, most of which were taken between 1935 and 1943 under the auspices of the Farm Security Administration. The photographic project was run out of Washington, D.C. by an odd bureaucrat named Roy Stryker, but he had the luck or talent to attract and supervise some of the best American photojournalists of the 20th Century - including Jack Delano, Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, Russell Lee, Gordon Parks, Carl Mydans, Arthur Rothstein, and Ben Shahn. In 1943, The File was transferred to the Library of Congress, where it is now the cornerstone of the Library's Prints and Photographs Division.LONG TIME COMING is a handsome book that contains over 400 images from The File, one per page, along with about 50 pages of text from Michael Lesy discussing Stryker, the history of the FSA project, and its importance in the development of documentary photography. The photographs are the reason to buy or browse through the book. When most people hear "FSA photographs", they think of images of the Depression, especially the "Migrant Mother" by Dorothea Lange, depicting a grim mother staring into the distance over the left shoulder of the photographer, elbow on knee and hand to chin, and her two children with their heads turned away from the camera and their faces burrowed into her shoulders. LONG TIME COMING contains similar photographs of poverty and dogged determination (though not "Migrant Mother" or other familiar photographs from the Depression or Dust Bowl), but its contents are not limited to the downtrodden, the poor, the farmer, and the migrant. There are few if any photographs of the rich and glamorous, but otherwise LONG TIME COMING contains a nearly comprehensive cross-section of life in the United States between 1935 and 1943 - cities, small towns, amusement parks, stock shows, coal mines, carnivals, country funerals, soda fountains, slums, etc.The text, unfortunately, does not measure up to the photographs. It is woefully (dis)organized and, for my money, too informal. Nonetheless, one can glean from it what probably are the significant points to the story of Stryker, the FSA, and The File. Lesy does note, in summary, that "the turmoil and disruptions of the Thirties provoked a kind of national identity crisis--a crisis that resulted in a search for authentic roots, and for signs and symbols of perseverance and rebirth." LONG TIME COMING exemplifies the truth of that observation. Its photographs depict a land, a people, and a time that have now become part of the psychic heritage of (many) Americans.The book, alas, is not cheap, but it is intelligently and sturdily put together and a copy should withstand many years of frequent use in a library. LONG TIME COMING deserves a spot in any general purpose or secondary school or college library. Indeed, I can see it as an instructive adjunct to any course on the history of the United States in the 20th Century. It also should be a valued (and, unlike many coffee-table books of photographs, an oft-browsed) addition to any home library.

A stunning book of 410 photos from the Farm Security Administration/Office of War Information archives now in the Library of Congress. This book takes a different approach to the many others which use FSA photos, here you will not see many of those well-known images of poverty in rural areas, the effects of land erosion, the plight of Southern sharecroppers, not even the greatest FSA photo of all (in my view) Dorothea Lange's Migrant Mother but instead a comprehensive and wonderful showing of the ordinary and everyday in American life from 1935 to 1943.All these fascinating photos are divided into eight sections, City Life, Hard Work, Hometowns, Hill Towns, Coal Towns, Family Farms, Hard Times and Amusements. Most of them are from 1938 to 1943 so there are few by Walker Evans who left the FSA in 1937 but plenty by Russell Lee, the most prolific FSA photographer. The photos (well printed on excellent paper) are presented one to a page with a caption, photographer's name and date centred below. Because these are FSA images they depict a very detailed picture of everyday life and in 1941 when the US joined the Second World War it was decided to expand the coverage to record the war effort and life in general. This is the main reason I like the book plus the eighty-two photos never published before.Between the eight photo sections author Lesy writes (in a very honest way) various essays about Roy Stryker, who ran of the FSA and how he organised the photographers work through his exacting shooting scripts (these were partially inspired by Robert Lynd and his 1925 book, `Middletown' based on Muncie, Indiana which turns out to be average small town USA, tough luck Peoria, Illinois!) how this huge file of images was distributed to the media, correspondence between Stryker and the photographers and more. I found one section (pages 230 to 235) called `The Middletown Spirit' very intriguing, it is a list of the things that the folks of `Middletown' (or small towns anywhere) believed in and as well as the goodness that one would expect it also reflects an alarming collection of deeply conservative beliefs, ethnic prejudice and a Horatio Alger like deference towards business. The back of the book lists all the negative numbers so you can order prints from the Library of Congress and in fact see 60,000 photos from the FSA/OWI collection on the Library's `American Memory' website.Because of what these photographs show, the quality of presentation and production, I think this will become the definitive reference book for the period.
