Good book with colors and detailed events of American history. I bought this book for my 8 year old but it's way over his head. This type of reading is better suited for children over 10 years of age. On a positive note, it's a great way to put my kid to sleep.
This book makes a great companion tool for beginning teaching of American History. It is a large, thick, VERY colorful book and filled with facts and pictures. It does not have "lengthy" text in it so while kids won't get bored it also means if you want to go into more depth of various lessons you will need to have an alternate history book or a companion teaching tool. Great for beginners to read though or to throw into the kids Book Basket or just sitting on the coffee table for people of all ages to browse and reflect.But you will need other tools (internet, library, companion books) to teach a more in depth study of American History.
Fantastic book on American History! This is an interesting and visually pleasing book that held the interest of not only my 9 year old and myself, but also my teenagers. Not an easy task for any book. This is a thorough and enjoyable history of the United States that will be useful to people of all ages who want to know more about that history.
This was grandsons favorite book rented for home schooling. So we of course added to his Christmas gifts, so he can continue to enjoy and use its' information. 10 year old eyes lit up when he opened this gift! Win for grandparents!Arrived intact and on time. Would recommend.
I found this book to be largely okay through the 1950s, but then much of the content became more "newsy" (and presented with political bias) than historical. Given that the book is specifically for children, the content related to the agenda of the sexual revolution is wholly inappropriate. Elementary school children do not need to be learning an explicit definition of "free love", seeing images with signs supporting abortion (really - they could not have found a different image for the women's rights movement?), or learn about gay rights. The heavy emphasis on violence was also concerning to me - I don't think elementary school children should be reading about school shootings. It's bad enough that they have to endure practice lock downs at school; the book gives them a reason to fear that something really terrible is in fact likely to happen.There is also an error in the Civil War section on page 78 that says Fort Sumter is in North Carolina. I believe South Carolina would beg to differ.
We love this for our kids. They're dealing with... questionable... curricula from school, so we are trying to teach the things they should be learning in 2nd and 3rd grade while they're instead memorizing the names of presidential candidates from the early 19th century... well organized, not too busy, and written to where a kid can follow or an adult can walk them through.
I have always loved DK books. They are the most expressive and colorful learning book around. Most of them are written for children but as an adult, I totally love them. They present facts simply and to the point. I recommend all of their books but especially their history books.
Such a fun, easy, honest way for our children to learn this countries history! Social Studies class & Reading class all in 1 book. Plus anything Smithsonian is outstanding, educational, interesting, beneficial! Kids will love this, mine did! I recommend it 100%
