Sad and funny and true. I lived it. Born in 1942 I can relate to most of the social mores, news stories, fashion disasters and hypocrisy. And yet I still maintain I had a terrific childhood up to the age of 10 years. Grandparents next door or nearby, my mother's sister like a second mother, cousins like siblings; living in a dead end suburban street where the neighbours' gates were used as Rounders' bases; the milkman, the breadman, the greengrocer all delivering and the corner stores which gave credit.I still have a friend of 73 years from those days. She attended the kindergarten my mother ran from home during World War 2.A back yard of fruit trees, and ducks and chickens and Grandad's bountiful vegetable garden next door.Saturday afternoon movies at the Sun Theatre cost 9 pence to go in and 6 pence to spend and 6 pence bought aniseed dumbells, ripe raspberries, milk shakes and black cats. Occasionally someone would drop a bag of Jaffas and they'd go rolling away towards the screen down the sloping concrete floor.Mr. Feldt supervised voilent or romantic action on the low slung canvas seats. The family of brothers who manned the Rising Sun bus service knew where we lived and dropped us safely home even if we'd lost our bus money..Picnics and swimming at Bluewater and Blackwater Creeks, now probably infested with crocodiles as indulgent greenies have permitted their spread as far south as Proserpine.Staying overnight with my friend at her family zoo and watching her Dad ride the old crocodile; trying to catch an emu and ride the billygoat. Or weekending with her family at "The Bohle" where mud crab catches were so bountiful they were boiled up in the backyard copper. And wonderful Magnetic Island where we spent 4 weeks each Christmas with extended family in a beach shack whose windows were pushed out and then propped by poles. We took live ducks and "chooks" on Hayle's ferry with a luggage pile like intending migrants.Even as a child I was aware of some dark elements under the surface and the hard time my mother had boiling up washing in the old copper, but the security of attending the same school from the age of 4 to 18 under the watchful eyes of family, friends and neighbours gave me a confidence that was true wealth and has permitted me to live an adventurous life without fear.

My only complaint is I wanted it to be longer. What amazing memories of driving without seatbelts, smoking on planes and the stitched up attitudes prevalent in suburban Australia in the 60’s and 70’s. And, youngsters, it’s all true. Most entertaining.

I had read all of the best bits in the newspapers before I bought the book, so the remainder was a disappointment.

Loved loved loved this hysterically funny book. I kept pestering my husband by insisting on reading him paragraphs that had me laughing out loud. And yes, rolling in the floor!

You can't possibly remember all the facts in this book so it's something to read a few times. I knew some of them but the majority were new and interesting. Toward the end some of the facts were repeats that's why I gave it 4 Stars. If you like Fun Facts this is the book for you.

Mildly entertaining. But it should really be called "5,000 Interesting Facts, 2,500 Repeats, 1,000 Partial Entries That Annoy You and 1,500 'Facts' That Are Not True." Buy this for the mild fun of the good half (at $3.99 it's a borderline buy), but be prepared for the annoyance of the other half.

Good for adding spice to conversation.

Utter and complete nonsense. So far, I've found 200 entries that are just WRONG. Facts that are nothing more than false rumors on the Internet and such. Like "a duck's quack doesn't echo and no one knows why." Yeah? Snopes cites this as a very common silly urban legend. Many of these in this book. Instead of educating, the book MISeducates by presenting as fact falsehoods. Not only that, but get this...1/3 through the book I have counted 150 NONSENSE "facts" where the so called author didn't even proofread or edit the book because the "item" is only a partial item. Such as, "John Johnson, Pete Anderson." The "author" didn't bother to proofread enough to know he only presented a half sentence. This is a ripoff and such a mixture of some facts with many myths that anyone reading it stands to be embarrassed by stating things as factual that someone else will correct him on, making a fool of him.

Many entries are repeated multiple times. Some are gibberish and many have ridiculous grammatical errors. Did no one proof read this?

What a waste of my time!!!! Poorly written, not edited, many repeats, and some incorrect information. There are many times when an item is started but the end is missing. The title says 10,000 facts but I doubt that is 5,000 different facts...the rest are repeatsFar too many (even one is too many) of the facts are just plain wrong. Please do not waste your time or money on this book! I am surprised that Amazon allows it to be on their site

I absolutely love this book. It is by far one of the best fact books I have ever read.If you are looking for a good entertaining read, get this! It is wonderful and I love it.

There are a or of fun facts but some are in the book five or six times. Sometimes part of the fact was missing making it an incomplete fact. Sure there were extra facts but they don't outnumber the overstated and missing facts.

Walt Disney's Uncle Scrooge:The Seven Cities Of Gold (The Complete Carl Barks Disney Library Vol. 14) (Vol. 14) (The Complete Carl Barks Disney Library), by Carl Barks

Review

“[Carl Barks's] richest characterization is that of a mallard he created from whole cloth: Donald’s skinflint uncle, Scrooge McDuck, a proudly self-made gazillionaire whose avarice is offset by his bravery and sense of honor. … Barks’ flair for combining humor with thrills is unmatched, as are his clear, expressive cartooning and his command of visual storytelling. The full-color restoration of the artwork and the useful historical notes give Barks’ consummate work the deluxe presentation it richly deserves.” - Gordon Flagg, Booklist“Carl Barks... was probably the best artist and writer working in the entire field of comics. ... Ingenious, clever, and funny, the Barks Duck Books... are as readable and immediate to me as an adult as they were when I first discovered them as a child.” - Jeff Smith (Bone, RASL), Mental Floss“I’ll never experience these tales from a child’s perspective -- but there is no question of their quality from my point of view as an adult.” - Jerry Beck, Cartoon Research“Barks… is considered to be one of the all time comics greats and his greatest creation, Scrooge McDuck, is his lasting legacy. Fantagraphics has been lovingly reprinting Banks' classic Uncle Scrooge comics into beautifully designed and recolored hardcover collections.” - Rich Barrett, Mental Floss“Let me be perfectly clear: The Don Rosa & Carl Barks Duck books are as good as comics get. Period. Nothing surpasses -- only matches -- the pure imagination, humor, adventure, and heart of these Donald Duck Uncle Scrooge stories.” - Vince Ostrowski, Multiversity Comics

Uncle Scrooge is one of the all-time great comic creations. A miserly duck with endless money has limitless potential for humor and Carl Barks never fails to capitalize. Volume 14 contains Uncle Scrooge stories beginning with September 1954. The book hits the ground running starting off with the title story, “The Seven Cities of Cibola”. George Lucas has admitted that this story was the inspiration for the opening scene in “Raiders of the Lost Ark” where Indian Jones triggers a rolling stone by removing an idol. I also assume this story was the foundation for the opening tale in the 1987 series Duck Tales where Uncle Scrooge and his nephews find a massive city of gold and treasures. It’s a great story but I had to laugh and groan at the ending. Back in the day writers used to use the tired old trope of a bonk on the head causing loss of memory. In a hilarious bit of plot convenience all five members of the Duck family plus the Beagle Boys get hit by flying debris, as Cibola collapses, causing them all to forget its existence. This is to explain why they didn’t simply dig it back up. I’ll give Barks the benefit of the doubt and assume he wrote it to be humorous rather than lazy.If you’re reading this review then I assume you are at least mildly interested in Disney comics and if you are this purchase is a no brainer. I can only assume this is the finest presentation this material has ever received and the price is great for what you get. For completionists this is perfect because eventually Fantagraphics will be producing every single Donald Duck/Uncle Scrooge story ever produced by Carl Barks. That will be a massive amount of material but given Carl Barks consistency at producing high quality it’s worth it. That is if you have the storage space for it all. The only thing I can imagine that might irk purists is that the images are significantly cleaned up from how they appeared in the comic books. As far as I’m concerned I much prefer seeing the images as the artist intended not as they appeared limited by printing technologies and budgets from 1954. I think it would be the rare reader who would be disappointed with this series.

When I was a kid I had an old original copy of the "seven cities" comic book (that had been my father's), and it was my favorite story. This collection accurately reproduces the original. The images give a similar feeling to the original, and the printing is a good medium between over-modernization and the original low-resolution half-tone printing. These are great adventure stories from a time when books and comics were the only way to get that "Indiana Jones" experience. And of course this book contains the story that inspired the beginning of the first Indiana Jones movie. There's also a lot of the feeling (and several plot points) of the Seven Cities story in the 1999 Brendan Fraser movie "The Mummy" and I highly recommend the one for fans of the other. It's really delightful to find these stories available once again to inspire new generations.G.

I used to read these stories as a child. I remember loving them, and spending many hours of fun by myself reading the adventures of Donald Duck, McScrooge, Rockerduck & Co. I wish I still had my original books!I’m now happy to share the same adventures with my kids, both under 11, and to see them enjoy these old tales just as much as I did! It brings back memories while fostering new ones. These stories are lighthearted, easy to understand, and capturing. I am planning on slowly buying them all and rebuild my old collection.Carl Barks, Giovan Battista Carpi, Don Rosa, you name it. I love them all.

Other reviewers have said it all; Carl Barks' Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge comics are fantastic in their art and stories. The stories themselves are timeless adventures, where humor and a bit of real-world history is presented in a way that doesn't speak down to younger readers, and doesn't make adults feel like they're reading kid comics. This is my second volume of many that I plan on purchasing, much appreciation to Fantagraphics for making this series possible!

I grew up with the comic books that included the duck stories of Carl Barks. It is wonderful to relive them again in this series of books. Not just the stories themselves but reproductions of cover art. At the end of the book you’ll find short histories of each story and one-pager including any art that had been changed by Barks himself to tighten the story or at the request of his publisher. My one complaint is that the book is listed as being for a maximum age of 12 and at over 70 years of age I’m enjoying them with an older eye that notices deeper meanings and subtle humor to the stories than I did as a youngster.

These stories are beautifully written and drawn. I first read them as a child, but I think I enjoy them more now. I'm grateful they're still available to the public. Suggestion to readers: look carefully at each panel, notice the choices that Barks makes. Everything is done with great care. Suggestion to Amazon: please produce more of these volumes in Kindle format.

As always, the stories from Carl Barks are quite enjoyable. They were written in a heyday of these Disney classic comics, possessing a sharper humor than we usually see in today's stories for youngsters. I haven't been a youngster for quite awhile but these are still a fun read.

Grew up on these comics. Carl Barks was a fantastic story teller and illustrator. Tho a kid the first time, the 50's, the stories were educational as well as interesting and escapist. These books have done a great job in restoring the original art and color and include interesting background information on the artists / writer and the story behind the story. Great to revisit old friends and find the stories still interesting 60 years later. Looking forward to more releases of Carl Barks' work.
