Review
“John Joseph has more energy than a Tasmanian Devil, is more charismatic than Regis, and has led more lives than an alley cat.” (Rip Esselstyn, New York Times bestselling author of The Engine 2 Diet, triathlete and firefighter)“In language that cannot be misunderstood, John has written the quintessential pussy-transformation guide.” (Brendan Brazier, author of Thrive: The Vegan Nutrition Guide To Optimal Performance in Sports and Life)“John’s book proves you don’t need meat to be strong, kick ass and be athletically competitive.” (Jake Shields, MMA Champion Fighter)“Meat is for Pussies is a book for real men ... the kind who are made of real meat!” (Morgan Spurlock, Supersize Me/ Inside Man (CNN))“When we are born, our bodies are turbo engines. After years of eating junk food and animal products, we turn our bodies into clunkers. John Joseph’s raw honesty drives that point home to perfection. And his advice works: The benefits of a plant based diet can be profound. ” (Robert Ostfeld, MD, Director of the Cardiac Wellness Program, Montefiore Hospital and Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine, Albert Einstein College of Medicine)“The plant-based movement is exploding thanks to people like John Joseph, who has never worn a pair of Birkenstocks. John has long shown how there’s nothing tough, manly, or rebellious about willfully participating in an animal-based, junk-food, big pharma system...” (Brian Wendel, Producer, Forks Over Knives)“Think meat makes you strong and tough? Think again! This book blows away the myths and tells it like it is. Current meat-heavy diet fads, especially the Paleo diet, are based on pure fantasy, backed by years of lies and misinformation. I ordered this book for my husband, as a gift. We'd already been eating plant based for many years, when I purchased this book; however, my husband works in a man's world, paper industry, and he needed the encouragement of a book, such as this, written by a real guy.We live in Northern MN, which is all about hunting and fishing, burgers, beer and barbecues. For all of these reasons, it can be especially tough for a man to eat plant based, and fit in. Many men treat anyone who eat this way as a lesser person, in our rural area.Thankfully, my husband has personally seen so many health benefits from eating this way, and can brush off the arrogant and inconsiderate treatment from others, and chooses to keep eating plants, regardless. This book was perfect for reminding him, he's not alone, that there's other tough guys out there, like him, who choose to eat this way.My husband absolutely loved this book. He enjoyed reading every single minute of it. He would read something he liked, and tell me about it. It made him feel good knowing he wasn't alone, being a vegan, in a man's world. There's often an incorrect stereotype attached to male vegans, that they are wimps, nerds, geeks, only upper class, and that's not true. There are tough guys who eat this way, too and this book shows that.Overall, a very good book, that's very inspirational and interesting. It also has many good recipes as well.
I have mad respect for John Joseph. You should listen to his story, his music, and (if in NYC), his walking tour. This book though is more of an addition than a main course.Yes, Joseph is effective, I guess given his audience, at getting his point across. The point is, you can only go with, 'Don't be a F'in meathead' so many times before it just gets old and you feel like the author is lost adequate verbiage. Unfortunately, that receptiveness happens a lot in this book.I'm definitely glad I own it, and would recommend it to certain people, but it's OK at best, and a little annoying sometimes at worst. A decent read, but if you're looking for actual convincing educational material, seek elsewhere.
I love this book!!! I have long been a Cro-Mags fan; and only recently met John Joseph (about 5 years ago). I read many disparaging reviews of this book and was reluctant to read it; that is, until a good friend (XVX) told me how much he enjoyed it. I am so grateful that I took his suggestion and read it for my self. I grew up on a plant based diet and left all that behind as I rebelled in true punk rock fashion!!! This book has helped to remind me of all the things the drugs and alcohol helped me to forget. Ignore some of the language of the book and just focus on the message. The author of this book is 10 years my senior; but looks years younger than me. Let's all stop poisoning ourselves and stop feeding the factory farm industrial complex.
Finally, A vegan book for men, by a man. John Joseph covers everything that a male vegan needs to know to be successful at his transition from meat eater to vegan. Issue like how men can get their protein, and daily calories are covered here. It also offers a really good exercise plan, for training. This is my go to vegan book.
On the spectrum of human diets, I’ve now spent more than half my life closer to the herbivore end than the carnivore end. When I first began my awakening, most vegans I knew were intellectual types. They were smart and compassionate, but they were not athletic. Many of them were scholarly to the point of being boring. Their tactic for spreading the importance of a plant-based diet was to shove a 500-page scholarly text at others. While that technique worked on them, asking someone to read a lot will never be a good way to reach the common man. With himself as but one example, John Joseph sets all this to right. Because of my previous experience with plant-power, I learned very little new facts from this book, and yet I still loved it. Finally, the benefits of a vegan diet have moved beyond the intellectual crowd. Now there’s room for a guy with a sense of humor, a guy who curses once in a while, a guy who likes loud music and athletics. It is way past time for a book like this. The world needs someone to get in people’s faces and tell them the truth: that meat is not essential to exceptional health (Joseph is a tri-athlete) that mass animal-slaughter is devastating to our environment and barbarically cruel. For the message to really stick, the messenger has to be athletic, to cut off the most common avenue of denial: that a plant-based diet is unhealthy and produces only sickly nerdy types. In short, John Joseph for president! Is this the most scientific book on being vegan? No. Is this the most articulate case for being compassionate to animals? No. Is this the most fact-filled assessment of factory farming’s environmental destruction? No. All that said, it was the most fun book on a plant-based diet I’ve ever read. It actually makes you want to be vegan by listing all the benefits (for yourself and the environment) as well as the athletic accomplishments of Joseph and his fellow travelers, who include active-duty Navy SEALs and MMA fighters.Just like punk rock, Meat is for Pussies lacks finesse, but it has so much heart that it ends up being more powerful than more refined works.I used to be shy about announcing my vegetarian leanings. No longer. Joseph has inspired me to be proud of this choice. So let me say, yes, I am a guy, I like heavy metal and sports. I am also compassionate toward the earth and all her creatures as best I can be.If you don’t like any of that then you can go f yourself.Larry NocellaAuthor of the novel, The Katrina Contract, available on Amazon
I've known John for many years, first met in the mean streets of the LES in 1982. Even , maybe we both around 18 he was walking the walk, talking the talk and got me off a crap diet and onto a philosophical path I never could have imagined! This book gets to the point real quick, no BS just the truth that you may not want to hear. You may not be able to adopt all this right away, but every small positive change will assist in helping you reach optimal health. The title may grab your attention, the content will help you live a more vibrant, brilliant and satisfying life. Keith Burkhardt
