I hate to say it but my son read this book cover to cover in a day and loved it. For someone who is struggling to identify with his gay side, he found this book very useful in learning how to relate to others who are and are not like him.
There are many good points in this book but unfortunately it really glosses high and above the true experience s of teens even with the "been there" segments. "If you are being rejected by your parents or bullied at school contact PFLAG or GSA or any number of organizations in your area" is about as practical as the author gets. It does have a lot of good advice and references to organizations but they are over-referenced.
This is an extremely important resource book for questioning youth -- their parents and their teachers. It provides in one place so many important resources for information and guidance. I think it would be especially important for straight youth to read to gain understanding and empathy for their gay friends.
Scholarly sources and sound advice. Not too preachy. Purchased for my gay, Asperger's, 15-year-old nephew, so yeah, finding a good book was a bit tricky. This is a great. book.
Puchased several LGBTQ books to donate to local Non-profit. They loved having this in their library.
I bought this for my out gay 9th grader for Christmas and he and I both have loved it. The information is important, the concerns are relevant to him at this point in his life, the layout is interesting and accessible. If you love your child, buy him or her this book.

This book tells the truth about the GLBTQ community. the hardships of discovery and coming out, the joy of accepting yourself, how to protect yourself in a not so understanding world. I only hope every GLBTQ teenager will read this and get a sense of hope, help, and understanding of themselves
