Review
“Radically open dialectical behavior therapy (RO DBT) is a truly innovative treatment, developed through translation of neuroscience into clinical practice, integrating various influences from dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), mindfulness-based approaches, emotion, personality and developmental theory, evolutionary theory, and Malamati Sufism. RO DBT is applicable to a spectrum of disorders characterized by excessive inhibitory control or overcontrol (OC). This is the first treatment that directly targets social signaling and nonverbal aspects of communication not only in clients but also in therapists. ... This book on the theory and practice of RO DBT, together with the skills training manual that describes the content of skills classes, are excellent guides for clinicians who want to embark in delivering transdiagnostic treatments based on science and clinical practice.”—Mima Simic, MD, MRCPsych, joint head of the child and adolescent eating disorder service, and consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist at the Maudsley Hospital in London, UK (Mima Simic, MD, MRCPsych)“A new and comprehensive statement from one of the more creative minds in evidence-based clinical intervention today, RO DBT brings together a contemporary focus on a limited set of key transdiagnostic processes, with new assessment and intervention techniques for moving them in a positive direction. Emphasizing flexibility, openness, connection, and attention to social signaling, RO DBT specifies the details that can matter, from how you arrange your consulting room furniture to how nonverbal cues signal social information. RO DBT seems destined to make an impact on evidence-based care in many corners of clinical work. Highly recommended.”—Steven C. Hayes, PhD, codeveloper of acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT); Foundation Professor of psychology at the University of Nevada, Reno; and author of Get Out of Your Mind and Into Your Life (Steven C. Hayes, PhD)“RO DBT offers an intriguing reconceptualization of traditional views of internalizing and externalizing disorders, and provides the clinician with valuable new tools to address a number of problems that have been particularly resistant to standard CBT approaches. I will definitely include RO DBT theory and techniques in my graduate-level intervention class. I know beginning clinicians in particular will be grateful to have a systematic way to approach these slow-to-warm-up clients who are difficult to establish rapport with. Their early termination from therapy and failure to respond to traditional approaches often leaves clinicians befuddled and critical of their own skills. RO DBT provides a compassionate way for clinicians to view this type of resistant client, as well as to work on some areas that are likely to benefit them. A very welcome addition to any clinician’s toolbox.” —Linda W. Craighead, PhD, professor of psychology and director of clinical training at Emory University, and author of The Appetite Awareness Workbook (Linda W. Craighead, PhD)

I am a 5th year clinical psychology graduate student who has practiced with a number of different treatment manuals over the course of my clinical training (e.g., DBT, Schema Focused Therapy, Cognitive Processing Therapy), and I can say that the RO DBT skills manual is hands-down the best one I’ve encountered to date, as well as being a requisite component of Dr. Thomas Lynch’s Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy: Theory and Practice for Treating Disorders of Overcontrol (see: https://www.amazon.com/Radically-Open-Dialectical-Behavior-Therapy/dp/1626259283/ref=pd_bxgy_14_img_2?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=1626259283&pd_rd_r=A6DCRCRWZTYW844Z1WH9&pd_rd_w=weBsM&pd_rd_wg=Zuoe1&psc=1&refRID=A6DCRCRWZTYW844Z1WH9&dpID=51jxJpJnlEL&preST=_SY291_BO1,204,203,200_QL40_&dpSrc=detail). It is arranged in an organized manner that simplifies instruction, and is extremely user-friendly in terms of its diagrams, instructions, teaching tips, worksheets, and supplemental exercises. I particularly appreciate Dr. Lynch's inclusion of techniques and protocols to use when troubleshooting common issues among OC classes, as these are often the most frequent questions that come up for me when learning new approaches. Although I have yet to run one of these classes, I have begun integrating RO skills with my individual clients and in my own life, and the results have been nothing short of astounding. THIS STUFF WORKS! I highly urge anyone interested in improving their therapeutic and interpersonal effectiveness to check out this manual.
RO DBT is a treatment for individuals with maladaptive overcontrol. This Skills Training Manual is a comprehensive guide for the clinician leading the skills class component of RO DBT. It provides step by step details, developed from over 20 years of research, as to how clinicians can teach necessary skills to overcontrolled individuals, such as how to forgive themselves and others, be more open minded and flexible, cope with shame, act more spontaneously, be more open in their emotional expression, and more. As an intensively trained RO DBT therapist for over 2 years, I have seen the skills make a significant difference for the clients I see. Highly recommended.
I have been a behavioral health provider for more than 20 years and have experience using several skills training manuals. This is very well written and easy to follow. There are clear instructions on what to teach when and activities that have made our experience with teaching/learning these skills fun. There are novel concepts included in RO DBT that are complicated and I really appreciate the step by step format of this manual.
In a well organized and coherent volume based on years of research and development, Dr. Lynch provides step by step guidance for teaching the RO DBT skills in a class setting. Skills class worksheets and handouts are found in the same chapter as the instructor's lesson plan. Varied methods for learning in a classroom setting are creative and are in and of themselves interventions for problematic overcontrol tendencies. As a clinician trained in this model and co-teaching RO DBT skills classes, I have been very impressed with the effectiveness of these skills, especially for people with significant overcontrol coping style for whom other psychotherapeutic interventions have had limited yield. In my experience to date using this model, participants with even moderate overcontrol tendencies have endorsed great benefit from RO DBT. Highly recommended if you wish to serve populations experiencing disorders of overcontrol.
This book is a companion to Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy: Theory and Practice for Treating Disorders of Overcontrol. That book provides an amazing overview of OC and how to practice RO-DBT, and this manual provides the concrete skills that OC clients will practice in the course of treatment (so you really need both if you are going to use RO-DBT). Disregarding the actual content, the manual is incredibly well put together and easy to follow. I like it a lot better than other manuals I've used before. In terms of the actual skills themselves, the rationale for using each skill is very clear. I am very impressed with this manual.
This skills manual has very easy to follow lesson plans and worksheets. The indication of optional vs required in each of the lessons helps me to manage my time more efficiently when teaching skills classes, while also providing information I can smuggle in if time does not permit me to teach the whole thing. Participating without planning is a game changer!
I love the introduction to this book. It takes a really complex subject matter and makes the understanding of overcontrol accessible to non-psych trained individuals. I think for most individuals that lean OC, they will benefit from the background on the treatment as well as how to actually practice RODBT skills in their lives through the handouts and the worksheets. By purchasing you get the book and the download of the worksheets. YAY!
A great companion to the Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy: Theory and Practice for Treating Disorders of Overcontrol. These worksheets help guide the clinician and client.
