Review

"A must-read for anyone wanting to transform their IT to enable the business to win. Told through an absorbing story that is impossible to put down, the authors teach the essential lessons in an accessible way. Every business leader and IT professional should read this book!"  -- Mike Orzen, co-author of the the Shingo Prize winning book Lean IT - Enabling and Sustaining Your Lean Transformation"This book is a gripping read that captures brilliantly the dilemmas that face companies which depend on IT, and offers real-world solutions. As Deming reminds us, 'It is not necessary to change. Survival is not mandatory.'  The Phoenix Project will have a profound effect on IT, just as Dr. Goldratt's book The Goal did for manufacturing." -- Jez Humble, co-author of the Jolt award-winning book Continuous Delivery and Principal at ThoughtWorks Studios"This book is the modern day version of The Goal.  Today, our constraints aren't robots inside our factories, but it's how we manage technologies like Tomcat and Java that power our most critical projects and applications. This book continues the journey that began with Shewhart, Deming, Ohno and Dr. Goldratt, and shows us how to diminish our modern constraints to help the business win." -- John Willis, VP Client Services and Enablement, enStratus, Host of "DevOps Cafe""This is the IT swamp draining manual for anyone who is neck deep in alligators." -- Adrian Cockcroft, Cloud Architect at Netflix "This is the most amazing IT book I have ever read. Though it follows a fictitious company, the events are so real life that anyone in industry is going to relate to the story.  Buy this book, read this book and then hand it to a senior manager in your organization." -- Stephen Northcutt, Fellow and President, SANS Technology Institute"This insightful walk through the pain and success of business will trigger deja vu for anyone who has ever run afoul of their complete reliance in their IT organization. I see my own experiences in every stage of the story."  -- Dr. Thomas Longstaff, Program Chair, Computer Science, Engineering for Professionals, The Johns Hopkins University

So... DevOps.DevOps is this mythical assembly line of progress that gets code from point A to point B in record time, and by record time, I mean no time. Coded, auto-tested, out the door, bing, bang, boom. The book was an entertaining read (and/or listen) and the authors cleverly couch the concepts of DevOps into a story about a failed delivery system (The Phoenix Project) built ala WaterFall, versus a new system hastily assembled (heh, see what I did there?) on an impromptu assembly line and delivered in record time, performing brilliantly - when compared to the failed behemoth Phoenix Project.So... here's the problem with DevOps, and the problem with this book.Companies with a nightmarish legacy code base (delivered or not as-of-yet out the door) that are attempting to build DevOps are using the same people that created their behemoth nightmare in the first place. As does the company in the hypothetical story in the book. Worse. The CEO in the book is a horribly bad boss, making wrong decision after wrong decision (I am sure to ramp up the tension to illustrate the saving graces of DevOps). So, I can tell you definitively that ANY company with leadership like that would lose their brilliant techs almost immediately. The market is in desperate need of brilliant techs so there is zero possibility that they are going to stick around a cess pool of politics when they can get a signing bonus and a raise from a company already doing it better and faster, and all without the drama. I'm just saying. And in order to pull off a DevOps operation, you absolutely need brilliant techs. You need tight, well executed product code with sufficient testing hooks so you can automate as you go. So you need brilliant QA that can understand and/or code the hooks right along-side the devs.In short, you need a whole lot more than a single Brent. You just do. And to imagine that there are a room full of brilliant techs writing broken down shoddy bloated code for Phoenix, but then can turn around and write the brilliantly architected code you need for the DevOps project... well... I am able to suspend belief when called upon, but this was more like taking it out back, shooting it, and burying it six feet under. I'm just sayin'.And with that being said, I am a huge, ginormous fan of DevOps (and the book was a FUN read / listen, thus the 4 stars instead of 3). It just takes an incredible talent pool to pull DevOps off and books like this makes companies think they just have to implement this process with the talent they have and poof! instant quality software that can be delivered instantaneously! Woohoo! They would be better served facing the reality of the mess they have, caused by (possibly) a lack of reasonable process, yah, but almost certainly by lack of talent as well. That's basically how they got where they got.Off soap box now. Doing the tango. Eating Oreos. Feel free to join!

The Phoenix Project is a business book masquerading as a work of fiction. As soon as I started evaluating The Phoenix Project in the context of a business book, rather than fiction, I started enjoying it a lot more, gaining much more insight into the concepts presented, rather than focusing on the unsophisticated prose and highly contrived scenarios. The "plot" serves as a vehicle for the authors to explore and pontificate on the business ideologies presented throughout. The main character, Bill, is mentored through each of these concepts, implementing them for the benefit of the reader to see the dramatic impact each can have on a business. For the most part, this is well executed, but it can become tedious when the characters "furiously take notes, so that they can google the terms later." Yes, the authors really write this, banging the reader of the head with, "Hey Dummy, are you paying attention? This is important."One of the best parts of the book was actually after the fictional plot ended, and the authors took the extra time to collect the concepts presented and revist them in a brief summary at the end. I hoped for this, as going back through The Phoenix Project to find each in turn, and learn more would have been difficult. If I could suggest to the authors an improvement, it would be to break the 4th wall during the fictional telling of the plot, and provide footnotes or references to the reader referencing where in the summary section they can read a bit more about a given concept. Nothing would be lost by this approach, as the reader quicky realizes the point and purpose of the plot anyways.Overall, The Phoenix Project provides an easy way for non-business people to get their feet wet with process improvements, without making the explanations and concepts too burdensome. I find myself quoting passages with co-workers who've also read the book, realizing that all too many of the scenarios presented are real life problems we face everyday (though perhaps less severely than in the Phoenix Project.) As such, I know I've already taken something away from the book, even if I won't have a chance to master every improvement, or even experiment with them all. It provides a new way of thinking about software development, and all the organizations it impacts. Four stars.

I purchased this book to help prepare me for the CCRN (Neonatal) exam. After reading some of the book, I wish I would've read this book when I became a NICU nurse. This book is a wonderful reference, and I love how it does into detail of the conditions: from the patho to the treatment. It's easy to follow and very informative. I will be bringing this book with me to work and referring to it while caring for my pts.

This is considered the gold standard for studying for the RNC exam. It also makes a great reference book for NICU nurses at all stages of their careers. It's very detailed and organized in an outline style format. Because of that, it can be tedious to read. I used it in conjunction with Merenstein & Gardner's Handbook of Neonatal Intensive Care, 8e to prepare for my RNC exam. They complement each other nicely.

This book got me through the CCRN-NIC and my friend through the RNC-NIC so whichever test you're taking definitely use this!! Also great for review if you're not taking an exam. I still reference it often.

So disappointed. I purchased this book to help write and support my evidence for my senior nursing BSN research paper and pages 391-438 missing!! I’ve not needed the book until now in the semester very disappointed. Also I feel like this book was removed from a NICU unit and sold without permission. I’d like a refund !!! (I only starred this rating because it was required)

Love the book and the content of it.. while using it for work I just realized it’s missing three chapters Pages 390.. suddenly jumps to 430... really disappointed andfeel totally jipted!

Arrived quickly and in excellent condition. Very informative and concise a lot of information to absorb. Excellent reference for a new nurse, or any NICU nurse. I hope to use this information to pass my exam.

I am studying for my Neonatal RNC and this book is invaluable. It was sent in perfect condition; Brand new as stated on the listing.

Book is missing 50 pages! The entire respiratory and apnea chapters are missing. Very disappointed...those are pertinent topics for NICU care.

Originally i picked up "Razor Girl" and thoroughly enjoyed it. So I ordered his four best sellers.I should have been a bit more diligent. The four I ordered [SCAT, CHOMP, HOOT and FLUSH] are all "young adult books".I have now read all four and they were very good. I am now passing them on to my grand children. Good plots and characters. Great messages and all very good reads.

My granddaughter hates to read, but her school participates in a required reading program. For the last four years she has read with me by phone long distance so she will actually read the books and pass the quizzes. We started with the Magic Tree House Series and I moved her gradually into more mature reading over the years. As an ex-school librarian I have read many children's books and found she enjoyed my suggestions...if not in the first few chapters, definitely by the end of the books. I began with classics, Newbery Winners and Honor books and books by the authors of the winners. To me they had proved themselves. So last year we read Hoot, and she loved it. We moved to Scat, Chomp and finally Flush. Mr. Hiaasen has a grasp on what makes children laugh. SHE liked this one very much. I unfortunately find they all become basically the same template... same theme, same locations, different characters. I cannot blame him; it worked for Michener. And the books are still better written than many books in the children's sections these days. I would definitely recommend it for children who need fun in their reading to make them read. I bought the hardcover because she likes to keep all her favorites and lend them to her friends.(I bought two copies...she has the hardcover; I read along from my Kindle!)

An easy read (think it's for about middle school age) but a very well-written and intriguing story. I've read two others of his books and they are for adults and certainly page turners.

This is a kid's book- and as an adult I LOVED it. I am a Carl Hiaasen fan, and love that a book like this can also inspire kids toward environmental awareness and possibly activism. I initially thought the concept was a bit far fetched - a gambling boat operation flushing raw sewage into the river upon which it sat. Who dies that in 2015? Hasn't this sort of low life crime been eliminated? Apparently not, and I was shocked to read a real wolrd case 2 weeks after finishing the book. The Anchorage Daily News had an article about a floating strip club off Kodiak island in Alaska piping raw sewage from the "Wild Alaskan" directly into the harbor and lying to the Coast Guard abDarren Byler, general manager of Alaska Leader Tours and owner of the floating strip club Wild Alaskan on, Dec. 1, 2104. Byler and his wife are accused of piping waste from bathrooms on the Wild Alaskan directly into the Kodiak harbor, then lying about it to investigators with the U.S. Coast Guard. out it. This was the EXACT same scenario in this children's book! The more I read Hiaasen, the more I realize that many elements of his plots, although containing exaggerated characters for entertainment, seem to be based upon plausible scenarios.

A huge fan of Carl Hiaasen novels from his first novel to the present, his YA novels are filled with hysterical mystery adventures and this one does not disappoint. When Noah has to visit his dad on Father's Day in the local jail for sinking a casino boat that he knows is illegally dumping raw sewage in the harbor which then affects the swimming areas on the local beach where kids swim, Noah gathers some unlikey allies to prove his father is right. Some of Hiaasen's really colorful characters join Noah in his plan to flush the crooked casino boat owner out which includes his sister Abbey, an unreformed childhood biter, Shelly who is a bartender and woman scorned, and a mysterious pirate who is a surprise ending. Fast paced and full of antics that will have you chuckling as you read, I highly recommend this novel to "kids" of all ages. I also highly recommend his novel Scat and take a trip with a group of kids who help to save a baby Florida panther.

Everything Hiaasen conveys through his grownup novels he also conveys through is novels for young people. Quirky characters, seriously bad guys, environmental awareness, Florida weirdness - it's all here. What's not here is graphic violence, raunchy sex, and foul language, but the reader doesn't miss all that at all. Highly engaging, highly relevant, highly recommended.

This book was on my school’s 6th grade required ELA reading list. My son isn’t a huge fan of reading but really enjoyed this book. He liked it so much he asked me to order the other books from this author! He read Chomp over a weekend!

Great book! My first book from Carl Hiaasen and it was wonderful! Going to read another book by him! Recommend for younger readers but adults will enjoy too! You learn about keeping the environment clean and safe and standing up for what is right! Thanks❤️
