This book was hard to put down. The story was so compelling, I could see it become as popular as the classic To Kill A Mocking Bird. It's a tale of being black in a white world in the South before the Civil Rights era - an especially hard time for black females. I cheered for Merlene and wanted her to succeed. I wanted her to escape harm -- and hard work in the cotton field. I believe this book has so much potential. Could use another edit but that didn't take away from the story for me.Barbara A. Being from the Deep South myself and old enough to remember segregation, this novel touched my heart. Our schools were integrated in the late sixties, despite a bigot governor’s best efforts to prevent it. I am so thankful for that, as some of the best friends in my life have dark skin. It’s common these days to see mixed race couples and there are many mixed race children. Discrimination is a thing of the past, at least in my little corner of the world. It was hard to read this story, to hear again just how African Americans were treated back then. I am ashamed. And again, so thankful that things are different now and I witness blacks and whites respecting each other, loving each other every time I’m in public.Mama was a tough old bird! She’s on the other end of the spectrum from my own mother, who slept in a drug induced stupor while her 13 year old daughter, who happens to be me, was impregnated by an 18 year old boy I should never have been allowed to be with. Marlene had a happy upbringing though, for the most part and there is no doubt she was deeply loved by her family. This one will grab you in the first pages and won’t let you go until the end. So glad I found it!
The topic.was the reason. I chose this.book. Unfortunately the writing was choppy and just simple. I don't know.if the author did.this to make it sound like it was written by the main.character, but that is what it felt.like. it just never flowed smoothly
Meh. It was good, but not as good as I'd hoped. It gave some insights into her life, and the times, don't get me wrong. The writing style is very simple, not necessarily bad, but there were points where I couldn't tell if she was purposely writing the way they talked "back then", or if the written English was just kind of choppy and awkward in some constructions. I finished it, but considered not doing so, just because it was slow going at times.
This book is a choppy, bunch of events in a young girls life with no order or explanation. It may have been more interesting if things had at least been chronological order, In many parts the why, what, or how were left unanswered, i.e. How did Nola Mae die? I wanted very much to enjoy this book because I do like history and biographies but this left too many questions.
Great book. Couldn't wait to get back to it whenever I HAD to put it down. I loved the story line and connect with each of the characters as they were well developed in the story.
This book is like reading the family stories that have been passed down for several generations in my family. The end just sort of drops off into the future. Will it continue? Maybe by the next generation? Only time and the author know
I enjoyed the book. Although there were many interesting parts, it all seemed very disconnected . If it had been combined in a way that told a story ,I think it would have been very good.
