Very good book!!

Highly recommend it. Interesting to adults also, donated copies to church gift shop and school.

Junípero Serra is also a 12" x 9" hardcover for children from Ignatius Press. In fact, it shares the same illustrator (Emmanuel Beaudesson) as Let's Pray the Rosary, so you know right off the bat that the book is going to have lovely artwork inside. The book begins with a homily by Pope Francis on Junípero Serra in May 2015 preparation for his canonization in September 2015. Then, we start with Serra's early life, his tiny stature, and the fear that he would not live long after birth. However, he grew up and was a hard worker. He was also a quick learner and impressed his Franciscan teachers. He later became a priest and a teacher, but he dreamed of being a missionary. He eventually realizes that dream and he travels to the Americas. The book traces out his history and mission success in Upper California, San Diego, and San Carlos. The book concludes by speaking of Serra's statue being in Washington D.C., John Paul II making him Blessed, and Pope Francis making him a saint. This is a fascinating book about a saint who had an impact on the United States, so it is definitely worth checking out. However, due to the sheer volume of words in this book, I'd recommend it for ages 8 to 9 and up!

As we all know, St. Junípero Serra was canonized by Pope Francis on September 23, 2015 during our Holy Father's apostolic visit to the United States. As a Californian with a love for both the missions and Father Serra, my heart was warmed by the canonization, but I knew of many for whom it brought up issues of concern. This conflicted feeling of mine is one of the many reasons why I truly enjoyed reading the new book Junípero Serra: Founder of the California Missions by Linda Gondosch (Author) and Emmanuel Beaudesson (Illustrator). While the life, valor and faith of St. Junípero Serra deserve to be known and cherished, it's impossible to look at the story of the California Missions without acknowledging the hurt that was done to some of California's native sons and daughters. One of the reasons I enjoyed reading this new children's biography from Ignatius Press and Magnificat is that the book does not shy away from history. In sharing St. Junípero's dramatic calling to the priesthood and his passion to share his faith in mission territories, it also spells gently and in child-friendly fashion out some of the wrongdoings and conflicts of that time. We learn of Father Serra's passion to bring Christ to those living in this part of the world, but we also see him advocating for and ministering to those whose way of life was being shaped and changed. The book is well researched, detailed yet accessible, and filled with eye catching illustrations which draw us into the life, adventure and true caring of St. Junípero Serra.

Junipero Sera: Founder of the California Missions is a well written history of the man canonized by Pope Francis during his recent visit to the U.S.The story is fascinating by itself, but Gondosch makes it appealing to children by telling many interesting incidents that happened to St. Junipero. I was amazed at St. Junipero's persistence in following his goal of bringing Christianity to Native Americans in spite of great physical hardships and personal illness.Gondosch did not forget the negative side of St. Junipero's story. She talks about the ill treatment of the Native Americans, and how the Spanish wanted to change their ways. But St. Junipero was always their advocate.Gondosch wrote this book for children, and was always careful to explain terms that they might not understand. She made the book appealing by showing the human side of this man. And she made the book interesting enough that adults can enjoy it and learn the story of this interesting new saint.

Hoodoo Medicine: Gullah Herbal Remedies, Revised Edition, by Faith Mitchell

From the Author

My first trip to the South Carolina Sea Islands, in 1971, was life changing. Having grown up in Michigan, I was excited about the opportunity to learn more about southern black culture. Up to that time, I had never spent any time in the south. When I got to the Sea Islands I was shocked by the poverty; at that time, telephones, cars, and even running water were still scarce. I was stunned by some of the more remote backwoods settlements, where very little had changed since slavery. But I was most deeply affected by the rich, fertile beauty of the Islands and by the strength and integrity of the families I met - natural wealth that belied the widespread material poverty. I soon discovered that the Sea Islands were also as abundant in culture - ghost stories, animal tales, the Gullah language, plant knowledge - as they were in animal and plant life. These first experiences among the Gullah people led me to a lifelong interest in African American history and culture.

From the Back Cover

The Sea Island the southeastern Atlantic coast are known for their tropical beauty and for the Gullah people, African-Americans who descended from slavery to develop a distinctive dialect and rich folk heritage. As late as 1960, many of these islands were still unreachable except by boat, thus allowing Gullah culture to remain largely intact. Faith Mitchell, a medical anthropologist, lived with the Gullah people in the1970s to learn firsthand the folk medicine still practiced by its oldest citizens. Today, this knowledge has been nearly lost. Hoodoo Medicine describes in rare detail the medicinal plants and herbs historically used by the Gullah people. Part I includes a brief history of the Sea Islands, and the source for African-American folk medicine. Part II is a directory of all the medicinal roots, herbs and plants, detailing their use in the Gullah culture as well as Native American and Euro-American uses. Included are more than 50 drawings of various medicinal plants.

A Unique Record of a Nearly Lost Healing TraditionReviewed by William CoursonThe Sea Islands of the southeastern Atlantic coast are renown for their tropical beauty and for the Gullah people, African-Americans descended from enslaved ancestors who developed a distinctive language and culture. Cut off from the mainland, many of the islands were accessible only by boat as late as 1960, permitting Gullah culture to remain largely intact. Dr. Faith Mitchell, a medical anthropologist and former Clinton White House policy analyst, lived with the Gullah people for a period beginning in 1971 to learn for herself the traditional system of medicine still practiced by the islands' oldest residents, a knowledge that had nearly been lost and an experience she describes as `life-changing.'"Hoodoo Medicine: Gullah Herbal Remedies" describes in detail the medicinal plants historically used by the Gullah people. The book includes a history in summary form of the Sea Islands, their settlement and the sources for this lineage of African-American traditional ("folk") medicine, as well as an exhaustive listing of all the medicinal roots, herbs and other plant materials, elaborating their applications in the Gullah culture as well as borrowings by Native Americans and European settlers. This work captures traditional healing practices that have lasted far longer in the Sea Islands than elsewhere, but were once widespread throughout African-American communities of the South.Shocked by the poverty and lack of any modern infrastructure in the more remote backwoods settlements, the author found a place where very little had changed since the days of slavery. She was most affected by the rich, fertile beauty of the Islands and by the strength and integrity of the families she encountered, possessing a natural wealth and deep wisdom that belied the widespread material impoverishment. At the same time, she discovered that the Sea Islands were also as abundant in culture - ghost stories, animal tales, the Gullah language, plant knowledge - as they were in animal and plant life. These first experiences among the Gullah people led her to pursue a lifelong interest in African American history and culture."Hoodoo Medicine: Gullah Herbal Remedies" is a unique record of a nearly lost realm of African-American folk culture. It documents plant medicines used since the 1600s down to the present day, by the slaves and later their freed descendants. The Gullah healing tradition is one that has wed techniques and materials that originated in Africa with cures learned from the itinerant Moors, Native Americans and Europeans. This book is a window into the Gullah tradition, threatened in recent years by the migration of families, the invasion of suburban developers, and the passing of the elder generation. The healing traditions of the African American herbalists have been largely overlooked, called backwards or adaptations of other traditions, and Dr. Mitchell systemically and effectively refutes such claims."Hoodoo Medicine" belongs in the library of anyone interested in African American history generally and its healing traditions in particular as well as of anyone interested in traditional or alternative healing and herbalism. This is a valuable book, beautifully and lovingly written, that is inspirational in its effort to revitalize an important and nearly lost piece of history.

Thank you

The healing traditions of African American herbalists have been largely overlooked, called backwards or adaptations of other traditions. Faith Mitchell systemically refutes these claims in her concise overview of our ways of working herbs. "Hoodoo Medicine" belongs on the shelf of anyone interested in African American healing or multicultural herbalism. Though written several years ago, Mitchell's lovely book remains a powerful and inspirational affirmation of African wisdom in the New World.

Hoodoo Medicine: Gullah Herbal Remedies, Revised Edition is an excellent book and very well written and very easy to read and understand. I was amazed at all of the folk ways I was not aware of.

Pentagram is one of those agencies that just do things right, great showcase for their work too

Pentagram is one of THE best studios in the country and the world; this is a showcase of (all?) their logo work. Classy presentation by showing all logos in black. While some logos are unremarkable, there are plenty of amazing works and some not as common. A definite go-to resource for logo designers. This needs to be on your shelf.

Yet another excellent book, this their 8th, from the design firm of Pentagram. The book is clean and most concise. Right on the "mark"!

You're out of luck if you missed purchasing this limited edition by Pentagram.Simple yet elegantly presented.I wished I ordered more than one.

This is an exceptionally good collection of logos from Pentagram. Even though it's printed in black and white, the logos are visually strong, distinct and classy. The variety of style is great and varied. The client list is also impressive, from small businesses to well known corporations.Highly recommended to logo designers.
